About the Role

The Syracuse VA Medical Center is seeking a full-time Registered Nurse for the Gastrointestinal Clinic within the Specialty Department. The ideal candidate demonstrates strong integration of biopsychosocial principles, cognitive skills, and technical competency while delivering high-quality patient care across age-specific needs.

Responsibilities

  • Assess, plan, implement, and evaluate nursing care for patients in the Gastrointestinal Clinic.
  • Provide competent, evidence-based specialty care to assigned patients, with oversight of licensed vocational nurses/nursing assistants as appropriate.
  • Deliver patient care, care coordination, health promotion, health education, and coaching on wellness, disease prevention, and chronic care management.
  • Assist in directing the provision of nursing education, orientation, competencies, and quality improvement initiatives.
  • Direct other providers and partner with patients, families, and the interdisciplinary team to promote safe transitions across the healthcare continuum.
  • Integrate theoretical concepts, critical thinking skills, and technically skilled practice in specialty care settings.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Requirements

  • Proficiency in basic written and spoken English, as required by 38 U.S.C. 7403(f).
  • Graduation from a school of professional nursing approved by the appropriate accrediting agency and accredited by either:
    • The Accreditation Commission for Education in Nursing (ACEN), or
    • The Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE).
  • Current, full, active, and unrestricted registration as a graduate professional nurse in a State, Territory, or Commonwealth of the United States, or the District of Columbia.
  • For graduates of foreign schools of professional nursing:
    • Possession of a current, full, active, and unrestricted registration meets the requirement for graduation from an approved school of professional nursing.
    • Credit for foreign nursing education higher than associate degree/entry level requires formal degree equivalency validation from a recognized equivalency evaluation service (e.g., International Consultants of Delaware).
  • Graduate Nurse Technician (GNT) Exception: Candidates who meet the basic education requirements but lack licensure may be appointed on a 120-day temporary basis while pursuing licensure (extendable up to two years on a case-by-case basis).

Qualifications

The following scope, education, and dimension criteria determine grade assignments:

  • Nurse I - Level I:
    • Delivers fundamental, knowledge-based care while developing technical competencies.
    • Associate Degree (ADN) or Diploma in Nursing, with no additional professional nursing experience required.
  • Nurse I - Level II:
    • Demonstrates integration of biopsychosocial concepts, cognitive skills, and technically competent practice.
    • ADN or Diploma in Nursing and 1 year of specialized nursing experience equivalent to Nurse I - Level I, or a Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) with no additional experience.
  • Nurse I - Level III:
    • Demonstrates proficiency in practice based on conscious and deliberate planning; self-directed in goal setting for complex client situations.
    • ADN or Diploma in Nursing and 2 years of professional nursing experience (1 year equivalent to Nurse I - Level II), or a BSN and 1 year of professional nursing experience equivalent to Nurse I - Level II, or a Master’s degree in nursing (MSN) with no additional experience, or a Master’s degree in a related field with a BSN and no additional experience.
  • Nurse II:
    • Demonstrates leadership in delivering and improving holistic care through collaborative strategies.
    • BSN with 2 years of professional nursing experience equivalent to Nurse I - Level III, or an MSN with 1 year of specialized nursing experience equivalent to Nurse I - Level III, or a Master’s degree in a related field with a BSN and 1 year of specialized nursing experience equivalent to Nurse I - Level III, or a Doctoral degree in Nursing with no experience, or a Doctoral degree in a related field with a BSN and no additional experience.
  • Nurse III:
    • Executes position responsibilities demonstrating leadership, experience, and creative approaches to management of complex client care beyond the immediate practice setting.
    • MSN and 2 years of specialized nursing experience (1 year equivalent to Nurse II), or a Master’s degree in a related field with a BSN and 2 years of specialized nursing experience (1 year equivalent to Nurse II), or a Doctoral degree in Nursing and 1 year of specialized nursing experience equivalent to Nurse II, or a Doctoral degree in a related field with a BSN and 1 year of specialized nursing experience equivalent to Nurse II.

  • Gastroenterology (GI) experience.
