Gas Leak Survey Technician

About the Role

Join our team and help ensure the safe and reliable delivery of natural gas services. In this role, you will independently plan and conduct annual leak surveys across residential, commercial, and high-pressure gas systems, including cast iron and ductile iron mains. This position also provides opportunities to assist with gas, water, and wastewater operations and maintenance as needed. The ideal candidate is safety-focused, detail-oriented, comfortable working independently, and proficient with technology in a field environment.

Responsibilities

  • Identify and document gas leaks
  • Perform minor meter leak repairs
  • Accurately record survey data using handheld electronic devices
  • Conduct quality checks to ensure data accuracy and compliance
  • Support additional gas system integrity activities, including cathodic protection (CP) surveys

Physical Requirements

  • Works outside 85% to 100% of the time in all types of weather conditions as the job requires
  • Must be able to walk long distances, up to ten miles or more daily, while carrying portable leak detection equipment weighing approximately ten pounds over rough terrain
  • Work that is performed in the office is under normal office conditions
  • May be required to work unusual hours from time to time, as operational issues require

Requirements

  • High school education or equivalent
  • Two (2)+ years of experience or technical training in a related field (electrical, electronics, hydraulics, mechanics, or pneumatics)
  • Ability to achieve all Operator Qualifications (OQ) required for conducting field surveys and grading natural gas leaks within one month of hire date
  • Ability to be proficient in use of mobile data and/or electronic data collection devices
  • Ability to communicate effectively to the customer and public about safety surveys when approached
  • Valid driver's license

Preferred Qualifications

  • One (1) + year of experience with design, construction, and/or operation of natural gas system
  • Two (2) year technical degree or series of related coursework
  • Basic knowledge of Galvanic cathodic protection systems
  • Direct experience with a natural gas distribution system
  • Experience in public relations and/or professional communications
  • Basic computer skills including GIS, CIS, and Excel
