Gardener - Examination

This application is for a Civil Service Examination. Successful candidates will be placed on an Eligible List for future openings.

Salary

$23.80 - $27.58 per hour

Responsibilities

• Performs or supervises the production, planting, and maintenance of landscape and ornamental plants, interior plants, and greenhouse plants including tropical plants, flowers, shrubs, trees, and grass.
• Performs weeding, pruning, and trimming of plants.
• Applies mulch, fertilizers, and pesticides.
• Cleans and maintains upkeep of park facilities, grounds, and equipment.
• Plows and clears snow.
• Supervises the work of seasonal employees.
• Interacts with the public.
• Completes reports.

Requirements

• Associate’s Degree in a Horticulture Field from an accredited college or university, or two years of full-time paid experience in greenhouse, nursery, landscape maintenance, or other related field which includes the operation of landscape maintenance equipment (e.g., vehicles and trailers, walk-behind and riding mowers, spreaders, and spray equipment).
• Valid State of Ohio Driver’s License.
• Commercial Pesticide Applicator’s License in a horticulture-related category (5, 6, or 8 or any of their sub-categories) for the State of Ohio required within six months of hire.

Preference Credits

• Cleveland Municipal School District (CMSD) Preference: Graduates of the Cleveland Metropolitan School District (CMSD) receive an additional five (5) points upon achieving a passing score in an open competitive entrance-level examination. Proof of graduation from a CMSD school must be provided at the time of application.
• Veterans’ Preference: Eligible veterans receive an additional five (5) points for an honorable discharge or general discharge under honorable conditions, or ten (10) points for a service-connected disability of more than 15%. A DD Form 214 (long form) or official armed service document must be presented at the time of application.
