Garden Center Cashier

About the Role

The Grass Pad is hiring Part-Time and Full-Time Cashiers for our Barry Road location. As a Cashier, you’ll be the first and last person to interact with customers, contributing to a welcoming and friendly shopping experience. While you won’t answer every customer question, you’ll need to know where to find the answers. This role has the potential to evolve into a supervisory position.

We specialize in helping customers—from commercial clients to first-time lawn care beginners—find the right products. You’ll work in an open-air, green environment surrounded by plants and enjoy engaging with people.

Responsibilities

• Greet customers as they enter and direct them to sales staff.
• Answer telephones courteously and direct calls to the correct stations.
• Make radio callouts to ensure customers are properly served.
• Handle cash, check, and credit card transactions accurately and efficiently for both retail and commercial customers, including using appropriate tax codes and charge accounts.
• Assist with design and merchandising of the sales floor, including setting up promotional displays and writing signage.
• Restock shelves, keep products clean and orderly, and maintain a tidy workspace.
• Count drawers in and out at the beginning and end of each shift.
• Engage customers in conversation to add a personal touch to transactions.
• Explain the benefits of key products to customers.
• Assist with clerical duties such as stocking shelves, pricing items, and housekeeping.
• Operate a computer-based point-of-sale system and other office equipment.

Requirements

• Great attitude and a passion for customer service.
• Enjoy talking to and interacting with people.
• Comfortable working in an open-air, outdoor environment around plants.
• Excellent attention to detail and ability to handle multiple tasks at once.
• Previous cashier experience.
• Interest in gardening, lawn care, or a "green thumb" (bonus if you have an artistic flair for merchandising).

Schedule

This is a part-time or full-time hourly position with daytime hours and some weekend availability required. Hours vary by season, with the busiest periods in spring and fall. The store is open seven days a week year-round, and weekend/overtime work is required during peak seasons.
