Garageperson - Part Time

Relationships
Reports to Maintenance Supervisor. Supervises: None
Has regular work contact with the general public, Janesville Transit customers, Janesville Transit staff, and Janesville Transit Management.
Regular hours for this position are Monday through Friday, 2-3 evenings per week, 4:00 p.m. – 11:00 p.m.; plus, alternate Saturdays, 7:30 a.m. – 11:30 a.m. & 3:30 p.m. – 7:30 p.m.; additional times as arranged. Total of 14 to 29 hours per week.
Essential Duties
- Performs daily fueling, washing, cleaning, and parking of transit buses.
- Performs miscellaneous building/grounds/facility cleaning and maintenance at garage, Transfer Center, passenger shelters, etc.
- Affords assistance with miscellaneous seasonal work assignments (e.g.: snow removal, cleanup/painting of buildings and grounds, “Top to Bottom” bus cleaning)
- Affords assistance to full-time maintenance personnel as needed with miscellaneous shop duties.
- Serves as a limited fill-in and bus driver during emergency situations, (i.e. to switch-out a defective, damaged, or broken-down bus) and assists drivers running late on routes, filling-in for a bus driver who is involved in a break-down or accident, etc.
- Takes the lead in operating the fuel line, completing necessary fuel line paperwork when full-time employees are unavailable to work.
- Opens Transit Services Center and prepares buses for service every Saturday.
- Closes and secures the facility and all vehicles on weekdays and Saturdays when full-time employees are unavailable to work.
- Performs other special projects and other duties as assigned or required during regular and non-business hours, including providing support as a part of any City response to essential or emergency operations.
Minimum Position Requirements/Qualifications
- Education and Experience: Minimum education and experience required to perform essential duties of the position. A High School diploma or equivalent is required. Minimum three years’ driving experience is required.
- License: Must have a valid state-issued driver’s license. If not already fully licensed for commercial driving with passenger endorsement and no air brake restrictions, must possess a valid Commercial Driver Learning Permit, issued from the State Motor Vehicle Department, and present to Human Resources upon date of hire with the City of Janesville. Applicant will not be allowed to begin employment without proof of a valid Commercial Driver Learning Permit. Possession or ability to obtain and maintain a Commercial Drivers License (CDL) with passenger endorsement and no air brake restrictions within 60 calendar days of date of hire.
- Knowledge: Requires familiarity with bus routes.
- Skills: Working with the public in a fair and consistent manner; maintaining objectivity and excluding personal bias while performing job duties.
- Ability: Pass pre-employment DOT physical examination including drug screen. On-going random drug and alcohol testing. Work independently to make routine decisions, manage time effectively, and meet deadlines without continual supervisory oversight. Establish and maintain effective work relationships with Maintenance Supervisor, Division Head, City employees, and the general public. Prepare and maintain accurate record of completed tasks. Communicate effectively, both verbally and in written form. Maintain a positive attitude and professional demeanor when dealing with the public and co-workers; address customer concerns in a helpful, courteous manner. Willingness to perform the full variety of tasks involved in fulfilling the essential duties of this position. Successfully interact with a diverse group of individuals. Successfully organize, prioritize, and schedule work activities and tasks in a diversified and fast-paced environment. Perform work in a safe manner, follow safe work procedures and take necessary safety precautions.

- Equipment, Instruments or Machines: Machinery and equipment including heavy duty transit buses, trucks, cars, vans, snow blower, sweepers, shop equipment to include hand tools and powered cleaning equipment, fuel dispensers and other items typical to the heavy vehicle maintenance industry.
- Physical Factors: While performing the duties of this job, the employee regularly works in a garage environment and is exposed to disagreeable conditions on a regular basis, including noise, dirt, moisture, and diesel exhaust. The employee is occasionally exposed to potential biohazards (protective equipment provided) and disagreeable soilage. This position occasionally walks, stands, stoops, kneels, crouches, crawls and exerts up to 100 pounds of force by lifting, carrying, pushing, pulling, gripping with hands, or otherwise moving objects. The employee is frequently required to see/observe, talk/speak and listen/hear; use their hands to finger, handle, feel or operate objects and equipment; repetitive arm, wrist, hand and eye movements are included. This position may be required to work in situations that require climbing, exposure to heights, and elevated or precarious positions for sustained periods of time. There is frequent twisting, reaching, wrist turning and grasping. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and the ability to adjust focus. Hand-eye coordination is necessary to operate computers and various pieces of equipment. Employee is required to use cognitive ability to reason, analyze and verbalize thoughts and ideas. Requires the ability to recognize and identify similarities or differences between characteristics of colors, shapes and sounds associated with job-related objects, materials or tasks. The employee will spend the majority of the working day inside but, on occasion, be exposed to all types of outdoor working conditions. The noise level in the garage is moderately noisy.
