FY27: Teacher, Special Education (LAD), Cabin John MS, 1.0 FTE

Under direction of the school principal and special education supervisor, the special education teacher provides direct instruction and instructional support to students with disabilities and works in collaboration with the general education teacher. Monitors and evaluates outcomes for students with disabilities and assists in the development of Individualized Education Programs (IEPs).

About the role

Special Education LAD (Learning and Academic Disabilities) teacher supporting students with disabilities in grades 6–8. Responsibilities include co-teaching in content-area classes, providing targeted instruction through resource classes, and managing a caseload of students with IEPs. The teacher will collaborate with general education teachers, families, and related service providers to implement IEPs, monitor student progress, provide appropriate accommodations and interventions, and support students’ academic, behavioral, and social-emotional success.

Responsibilities

• Provide direct instruction and instructional support to students with disabilities in collaboration with general education teachers.
• Monitor and evaluate outcomes for students with disabilities.
• Assist in the development and implementation of Individualized Education Programs (IEPs).
• Co-teach in content-area classes and provide targeted instruction through resource classes.
• Manage a caseload of students with IEPs.
• Collaborate with general education teachers, families, and related service providers to implement IEPs and monitor student progress.
• Provide appropriate accommodations, interventions, and support for students’ academic, behavioral, and social-emotional success.
• Attend school meetings, programs, and activities outside the instructional day as mandated by the Montgomery County Education Association agreement.
• Support behavioral interventions, including nonviolent crisis interventions, as required.

Requirements

• Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university in special education.
• Fluent in learning theory, differentiated instruction, developmental reading, child development, applied behavior analysis, and assessment.
• Student teaching in the specific area of exceptionality or two years of teaching experience at the appropriate level (elementary or secondary).
• Meets Maryland State Department of Education certification requirements for Standard Professional Certification I (SPC I) in special education.
• Certification in a content area is desirable.
• Knowledge of MCPS curriculum for the grade/content range, MCPS special education program, IEP processes, learning theory, differentiated instruction, data collection, best instructional practices, research-based reading instruction, multicultural education, and assessments.
• Knowledge of Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA 2015), Individuals with Disabilities Act (IDEA 2004), and state and federal policies related to special education.
• Ability to provide instructional support, adapt instructional programs and materials, and apply the six performance standards of the MCPS Teacher Professional Growth System (TPGS).
• Excellent communication skills and ability to work well with students, teachers, and parents/guardians.

Pay

Salary range for this 10-month position is between $66,690 and $135,745 based on education and experience.
