About the Role

Under the direction of the school principal and special education supervisor, the special education teacher provides direct instruction and instructional support to students with disabilities and collaborates with the general education teacher. The role involves monitoring and evaluating outcomes for students with disabilities and assisting in the development of Individualized Education Programs (IEP).

Teachers in special education schools or discrete special education service models must successfully complete specific courses provided by MCPS, including behavioral management and nonviolent crisis interventions. Teachers may also be required to support behavioral interventions.

Required attendance at school meetings, programs, and activities outside the instructional day as mandated by the Montgomery County Education Association agreement.

Responsibilities

• Provide direct instruction and instructional support to students with disabilities.
• Collaborate with general education teachers to meet student needs.
• Monitor and evaluate outcomes for students with disabilities.
• Assist in the development and implementation of Individualized Education Programs (IEP).
• Adapt instructional programs and materials to meet student needs.
• Apply knowledge of MCPS curriculum, special education programs, and best instructional practices.
• Support behavioral interventions as required.

Requirements

• Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university in special education.
• Fluency in learning theory, differentiated instruction, developmental reading, child development, applied behavior analysis, and assessment.
• Student teaching in the specific area of exceptionality or two years of teaching experience at the appropriate level (elementary or secondary).
• Meets Maryland State Department of Education certification requirements for Standard Professional Certification I (SPC I) in special education.
• Certification in a content area is desirable.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

• Knowledge of MCPS curriculum for the grade/content range, special education programs, IEP processes, and learning theory.
• Thorough understanding of differentiated instruction, data collection, research-based reading instruction, multicultural education, and assessments.
• Knowledge of methods for teaching elementary math (if seeking an elementary position).
• Familiarity with Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA 2015), Individuals with Disabilities Act (IDEA 2004), and state/federal policies related to special education.
• Ability to provide instructional support and adapt programs/materials for students with disabilities.
• Strong collaboration skills with students, teachers, and parents/guardians.
• Excellent communication skills.
• Knowledge and ability to apply the six performance standards of the MCPS Teacher Professional Growth System (TPGS).

Pay

The wage range for this position is a salary between $33,345 and $67,873 based on education and experience.

Schedule

• Part-time.
• 10 working months (school year).
• Day shift.
