About the Role

Under the direction of the school principal and special education supervisor, the special education teacher provides direct instruction and instructional support to students with disabilities and collaborates with the general education teacher. The role involves monitoring and evaluating outcomes for students with disabilities and assisting in the development of Individualized Education Programs (IEPs).

Teachers employed in special education schools or discrete special education service models are required to successfully complete specific courses provided by MCPS, including behavioral management and nonviolent crisis interventions. Teachers in these identified schools and programs will support behavioral interventions.

Required to attend school meetings, programs, and activities outside the instructional day as mandated by the Montgomery County Education Association agreement.

Responsibilities

• Provide direct instruction and instructional support to students with disabilities.
• Collaborate with general education teachers to meet student needs.
• Monitor and evaluate outcomes for students with disabilities.
• Assist in the development and implementation of Individualized Education Programs (IEPs).
• Adapt instructional programs and materials appropriately.
• Apply knowledge of MCPS curriculum, special education programs, and best instructional practices.
• Support behavioral interventions and crisis management as required.
• Attend mandated school meetings, programs, and activities outside the instructional day.

Requirements

• Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university in special education.
• Fluent in learning theory, differentiated instruction, developmental reading, child development, applied behavior analysis, and assessment.
• Student teaching in the specific area of exceptionality or two years of teaching experience at the appropriate level (elementary or secondary).
• Meets Maryland State Department of Education certification requirements for Standard Professional Certification I (SPC I) in special education.
• Certification in a content area is desirable.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

• Knowledge of MCPS curriculum for the assigned grade/content range and special education programs.
• Thorough knowledge of IEPs, learning theory, differentiated instruction, data collection, research-based reading instruction, multicultural education, and assessments.
• Knowledge of methods of teaching elementary math (if seeking an elementary position).
• Understanding of Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA 2015), Individuals with Disabilities Act (IDEA 2004), and state and federal policies related to special education.
• Ability to provide instructional support and adapt instructional programs and materials.
• Strong collaboration skills with students, teachers, and parents/guardians.
• Excellent communication skills.
• Knowledge and ability to apply the six performance standards of the MCPS Teacher Professional Growth System (TPGS).

Pay

The wage range for this position is a salary between $66,690 and $135,745 based on education and experience.

Schedule

• Full-time, 10-month position (MCEA).
• Day shift.
