About the Role

Under the direction of the school principal and special education supervisor, the special education teacher provides direct instruction and instructional support to students with disabilities and works in collaboration with the general education teacher. Monitors and evaluates outcomes for students with disabilities and assists in the development of Individualized Education Programs (IEPs).

This is a full-time position split between two schools: 0.5 FTE at Diamond Elementary School and 0.5 FTE at College Gardens Elementary School.

Responsibilities

  • Provide direct instruction and instructional support to students with disabilities.
  • Collaborate with general education teachers to monitor and evaluate student outcomes.
  • Assist in the development and implementation of Individualized Education Programs (IEPs).
  • Attend school meetings, programs, and activities outside the instructional day as required.
  • Complete specific courses provided by MCPS, including behavioral management and nonviolent crisis interventions.
  • Support behavioral interventions for students with disabilities.
  • Adapt instructional programs and materials to meet student needs.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university in special education.
  • Fluent in learning theory, differentiated instruction, developmental reading, child development, applied behavior analysis, and assessment.
  • Student teaching in the specific area of exceptionality or two years of teaching experience at the appropriate level (elementary or secondary).
  • Meets Maryland State Department of Education certification requirements for Standard Professional Certification I (SPC I) in special education.
  • Certification in a content area is desirable.

Skills & Knowledge

  • Knowledge of MCPS curriculum for the grade/content range and special education programs.
  • Thorough understanding of IEPs, learning theory, differentiated instruction, data collection, best instructional practices, research-based reading instruction, multicultural education, and assessments.
  • Knowledge of methods for teaching elementary math (if applicable).
  • Familiarity with the Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA 2015), Individuals with Disabilities Act (IDEA 2004), and state/federal special education policies.
  • Ability to provide instructional support and adapt materials for students with disabilities.
  • Strong collaboration skills with students, teachers, and parents/guardians.
  • Excellent communication skills.
  • Knowledge and ability to apply the six performance standards of the MCPS Teacher Professional Growth System (TPGS).

Pay

The wage range for this position is a salary between $66,690 and $135,745, based on education and experience.

Schedule

  • Full-time, 10-month position.
  • Day shift.
