Summary Description
The Middle School Content Specialist leads instructional excellence across Grades 6 through 8 at Forest Oak Middle School, a Title I community school in Gaithersburg, MD. They build the capacity of the department to analyze achievement data for improved instruction, ensure accelerated and enriched instruction and intervention support for all students, and contribute to building and sustaining a community of learners. The specialist coaches teachers, facilitates collaborative planning, analyzes student data, and aligns instruction to the Maryland Social Studies Standards with a focus on effortful thinking and academic language in speaking and writing.
Responsibilities
- Builds the capacity of the department to analyze achievement data for improved instruction.
- Ensures accelerated and enriched instruction and intervention support for all students.
- Contributes to building and sustaining a community of learners.
- Coaches teachers, facilitates collaborative planning, analyzes student data, and aligns instruction to the Maryland Social Studies Standards.
- Focuses on coordination of the instructional program and collaboration among teachers within departments and across teams.
- Works directly with adults to support the implementation of the instructional program and observes teachers to assist them in improving teaching and learning.
- Provides professional development to teachers and provides feedback on their teaching.
- Collaborates with other educators to improve teaching and learning practices.
Requirements
- Must be certified in the content areas, with additional certification required for Arts/PE content specialists.
- Required to attend school meetings, programs, and activities outside the instructional day as mandated by the MCEA agreement.
Qualifications
- Holds a master's degree or equivalent in semester hours of credit.
- Has had a minimum of three years of outstanding teaching experience with one year in MCPS preferred.
- Has had appropriate middle school teaching experience within subject fields of the department.
- Demonstrates skill in working effectively with people.

Job Specific Information
- Wage Range: Salary between $66,690 and $135,745 based on education and experience.

Selection and Continuance of Service
- Selected by the principal and a team including teachers from the content department. (Content specialists will need to achieve lead teacher status when the career lattice is implemented).
Evaluation
- Evaluation using the standards of Teacher Professional Growth System.
Certificate/License
- Must meet the Maryland State Department of Education certification requirements for the appropriate content area.
