About the Role

The prekindergarten program provides comprehensive services focused on early learning, health, and family well-being through individualized learning experiences, play, and planned instruction. This paraeducator position supports school readiness and well-being for students ages three to five by performing instructional and classroom management tasks, clerical duties, and other supports for teachers and professional staff in various learning environments.

This position combines multiple roles: 2 hours as a Pre-K Paraeducator, 1 hour as a Literacy Paraeducator, 1 hour as a K-5 Paraeducator, and 1 hour as a Lunch/Recess Aide. Work hours are 9:45 a.m. to 2:45 p.m., including a 15-minute paid break. The school is Title I.

All new paraeducators are hired at grade 15 and may promote to grade 16 after successfully completing a six-month probationary period and required training hours.

Responsibilities

  • Promote school readiness and student well-being through instructional and classroom management support.
  • Assist with planned instructional activities, including covering for teachers during temporary absences.
  • Perform clerical tasks to support teachers and professional staff.
  • Support individualized learning experiences in areas such as social skills, emotional well-being, language, literacy, math, and science.
  • Monitor and ensure appropriate student behavior.
  • Accommodate flexible scheduling, location changes, or program adjustments as needed.
  • Engage in outside duties as required.

Requirements

To be eligible for this position, candidates must meet one of the following criteria and provide the required documentation:

  • Unofficial university transcript with 48+ credits, or
  • Official transcript (if degree/credits were attained outside the U.S.) evaluated by an agency approved by the Maryland State Department of Education, or
  • Unofficial ParaPro Assessment result with a passing score.

Qualifications

Preferred qualifications (in order of preference):

  • Associate’s degree (Bachelor’s degree preferred) with at least nine credit-hours in education-related fields such as behavior management or instructional strategies. One year of experience working with students in structured educational settings preferred.
  • If no related education coursework, two to four years of experience working with children/adolescents in structured settings (e.g., daycare, preschool).
  • At least 48 college credits and two years of experience in a structured setting (e.g., daycare, preschool, after-school program).
  • Two years of experience in a structured setting and successful completion of the ParaPro Assessment with a qualifying score of 455 or higher.
  • Any combination of education, training, and experience that demonstrates the required knowledge, abilities, and skills.

Skills

  • Knowledge of child development, instructional strategies, and MCPS instructional goals and policies.
  • Ability to assist with instructional programs and monitor student behavior.
  • Patience and effectiveness in working with children, young adults, and staff.
  • Ability to follow written/verbal instructions and perform required tasks.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills in English.
  • Ability to interact with and support students with special needs.
  • Proficiency in standard computer hardware/software (e.g., Google Workspace, MS Office, web-based instructional tools).
  • Ability to quickly learn and meet the seven core competencies of the Supporting Services Professional Growth System (SSPGS).

Physical Demands

  • Frequent bending, walking, and lifting of objects/equipment up to 50 pounds.

Pay

The wage range for this position is $24.38 to $36.67 per hour, based on years of service.

Schedule

  • Part-time, 10-month position.
  • Shift: Day (9:45 a.m. to 2:45 p.m., including a 15-minute paid break).
