Under general direction of the principal and in collaboration with the media specialist, the media assistant supports and promotes the vision and mission of School Library Media Programs. As a key member of the media center team, the media assistant helps create a warm and welcoming environment for all students, staff, and the entire school community.
Responsibilities
- Work directly with students on information literacy skills, research skills, accessing online services, and/or access to library resources.
- Manage the school-wide library media catalog and perform daily routine operations of the media center.
- Provide work direction to student aides and parent volunteers.
- Assist in the orientation and training of new media assistants when applicable.
- Learn and communicate current technology to students and staff.
- Perform media center duties requiring technological aptitude, including independent learning of current technology.
Physical Demands
- Ability to lift and move books, audiovisual equipment, and other objects weighing 25-30 lbs.
- Stooping, bending, and standing for extended periods of time.
- Occasional operation of keyboard devices for extended periods of time.
Requirements
- High School or GED diploma required.
- Associate’s degree preferred, or completion of 30 semester hours of college coursework and/or one year of experience working with children in instructional situations if no associate’s degree.
- Experience using computer applications such as word processing, spreadsheets, databases, email, and the Internet.
- Experience working or volunteering in a library environment preferred.
- Other combinations of applicable education, training, and experience equivalent to an Associate’s degree may be considered.

- Ability to operate and troubleshoot computers, printers, copiers, and audiovisual equipment.
- Knowledge of or ability to quickly learn library media center procedures and techniques.
- Ability to handle and prioritize multiple tasks in an environment of frequent interruptions.
- Knowledge of or ability to quickly learn the seven core competencies of the Supporting Services Professional Growth System (SSPGS).
Pay
The wage range for this position is between $23.42 and $33.53 per hour, based on years of service.
