FY27: Long Term Substitute Counselor, Elementary, Luxmanor ES, Part-Time

About the role

Under direction, provides a comprehensive developmental program of guidance and counseling to assist students in academic achievement, career/educational decision-making, and personal and social development. Acts as a consultant to school staff, parents, and community members in these areas.

This is a long-term substitute position from 10/2/2026 to 11/20/2026. The weekly schedule is flexible, with certain provisions to be confirmed with the counseling office for interested applicants.

Responsibilities

• Deliver guidance and counseling services to support students’ academic, career, educational, personal, and social development.
• Consult with school staff, parents, and community members on student development and counseling-related matters.
• Attend school meetings, programs, and activities outside the instructional day as mandated by the MCEA agreement.
• Interpret and apply MCPS Policies and Procedures, the Comprehensive Guidance and Counseling Program, and the Program of Studies.
• Use technological equipment and computers to support counseling activities.
• Communicate effectively with individuals and groups of varying sizes.

Requirements

• Master’s degree from an accredited college or university in school guidance and counseling.
• Meets Maryland state certification requirements for school guidance and counseling.
• Thorough knowledge of MCPS Policies and Procedures, the Comprehensive Guidance and Counseling Program, and the Program of Studies.
• Knowledge of the growth and development stages of children.
• Ability to read, interpret, and take notes on written material.
• Ability to work effectively as part of a team or independently with staff, students, and parents.
• Excellent oral and written communication skills.
• Strong human relations skills to establish positive relationships with diverse individuals and groups.

Preferred Qualifications

• Experience as a teacher and/or counselor.

Pay

The wage range for this position is between $20.95 and $37.00 per hour.

Schedule

• Full-time position working 10 months.
• Day shift.
