Summary Description

Under direction, is responsible for providing comprehensive developmental guidance and counseling services to students in the area of academic achievement, career and educational decision making and personal/social development. Acts as a consultant in this regard to staff, parents and community.

  • Required to attend school meetings, programs and activities outside the instructional day as mandated by the MCEA agreement.

Job Specific Information

  • The wage range for this position is a salary between $66,690 and $135,745 based on education and experience.

Wheaton High School is hiring a Secondary School Counselor

  • To provide a comprehensive developmental guidance program focusing on students' academic, career, and personal/social development.
  • The role involves providing individual and group counseling, consulting with staff and parents, and utilizing modern technology for online scheduling to support student success.

Qualifications

  • Qualified candidates must hold a Master’s degree in school guidance and counseling, meet Maryland state certification requirements, and demonstrate thorough knowledge of MCPS policies and adolescent developmental stages.

Knowledge, Skills, Abilities

  • Thorough knowledge of MCPS Policies and Procedures, Comprehensive Guidance and Counseling Program, and Program of Studies.
  • Knowledge of growth and developmental stages of adolescents.
  • Ability to read, take notes, and interpret written materials.
  • Ability to work effectively as a team member and independently with staff, students, and parents.
  • Ability to use a computer and other technological equipment.
  • Ability to use the computer for on-line scheduling.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills with the ability to speak effectively to both large and small groups.
  • Excellent human relations skills with the ability to establish good relationships with many different types of individuals and groups.

Education, Training, Experience

  • Master's degree from an accredited college or university in school guidance and counseling;
  • Experience as a teacher and/or counselor preferred.
