Under supervision of a manager, supervisor, or field manager, performs routine duties involved in the production and serving of food, and in cleaning kitchen facilities and equipment. This is the entry and general helper level in the school meals program. Employees receive on-the-job training in basic food production and cafeteria operations from managers and other Division of Food and Nutrition Services staff.
Responsibilities
- Perform routine food production and serving tasks
- Clean kitchen facilities and equipment
- Follow HACCP guidelines for safe food handling from receiving to service
- Practice standard sanitation procedures for care and cleaning of kitchen equipment
- Learn standard school cafeteria operations
- Gather necessary menu items, recipe ingredients, and supplies
- Comprehend and follow written and verbal instructions
- Communicate effectively to meet the needs of students, school staff, and the community
- Work cooperatively with others under constant deadlines
- Demonstrate the seven SSPGS core competencies
Requirements
- Ability to perform sustained moderate physical effort
- Ability to move objects weighing 40-60 pounds
- Ability to operate commercial food service equipment
- Ability to stand continuously and work in extreme temperature variations
- Completion of the ninth grade (High School or GED diploma preferred)
- Experience with food preparation techniques and safety procedures
- Valid Class C noncommercial driver’s license
- Sanitation certification required or obtain within the first six months of employment
Skills
- Basic food production knowledge
- Basic human relations skills
- Knowledge of and ability to meet the seven core competencies of the Supporting Services Professional Growth System (SSPGS)
Pay
The wage range for this position is between $20.65 and $26.16 per hour, based on years of service.
