Manage the daily operations of a single Funeral Home location and line of business. Foster a sense of ownership, pride in staff, disciplined cost management, and profitable case volume growth. Responsible for short-term planning, achieving annual sales revenue and production targets, P&L goals, staff development, and exceeding client family expectations.
Responsibilities
- Financial Management
- Develop annual business plan and budget with Market Leadership, including financial, production, and revenue goals.
- Prepare annual operational and personnel budgets.
- Communicate Company and Market strategies, values, and goals to staff; translate into local actionable plans.
- Collaborate with Finance Field Manager to monitor financial trends and drive goals.
- Approve expenditures and invoices; manage overtime expenses.
- Operations
- Oversee day-to-day operations: communicate expectations, delegate workload, set priorities, and ensure annual goal achievement.
- Review and revise schedules to ensure on-time services that exceed customer expectations.
- Resolve escalated customer issues.
- Ensure compliance with regulations, procedures, and policies.
- Collaborate with local Management for resource sharing and operational enhancements.
- Work with Market Leadership and Corporate Departments on product, process, and technology improvements.
- Participate in community or civic organizations for local promotional efforts.
- Maintain facilities, grounds, and equipment; budget for repairs and furniture.
- Plan and implement annual initiatives affecting resources or goals across locations.
- Identify and implement innovative solutions to improve efficiencies.
- Support change initiatives and adjust to new work structures or processes.
- Funeral Arrangements & Directing
- May receive or initiate calls to deceased next of kin; facilitate Arrangements Conference with empathy.
- Assess needs and summarize desired outcomes; discuss life insurance and benefits (e.g., Veteran).
- Promote funeral, cemetery, crematory services, and merchandise (e.g., catering, flowers, Everlasting Memory products).
- May serve as Master of Ceremonies for visitation, funeral, or graveside services.
- Confirm authorization for service arrangements.
- Oversee placement of caskets in graves, crypts, or burial vaults; ensure personal belongings are removed.
- Leadership and People Development
- Develop a strong, trusting, and reliable team; provide oversight, guidance, and coaching.
- Offer regular informal and formal feedback; identify developmental needs and track progress.
- Align assignments with team members' career aspirations to develop skills.
- Apply proactive and collaborative management to increase engagement and minimize turnover.
- Screen candidates (internal and external) and hire or promote skilled staff.
- Recommend pay increases, special pays, and career advancements.
- Build effective business relationships across the organization.
Requirements
- Education
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- Technical diploma in Funeral Services or Mortuary Science preferred.
- Bachelor’s degree in Mortuary Science or other degree as required by state/province law.
- Certification/License
- Funeral Director license as required by state/province law.
- Experience
- At least five (5) years’ industry experience with increasing responsibilities.
- At least two (2) years’ experience guiding staff and communicating expectations.
- Prior people management experience preferred.
- Budgeting and expense control experience preferred.

- Ability to work evenings and weekends.
- Industry and financial acumen.
- Proficient in MS Office suite.
- Professional interpersonal skills; cultural sensitivity and tactfulness.
