Amazon Robotics is seeking a talented and motivated Hardware Functional Safety Engineer to design safety-relevant controls for robotics systems and industrial equipment. This role involves adapting well-tried design and safety principles and industrial safety standards to a new and emerging industry.

About the role

This position reports directly to the Sr Manager of Functional Safety. The ideal candidate will have demonstrated experience developing embedded control systems, expertise with machine safety and/or functional safety standards, and excellent communication skills.

Responsibilities

  • Specify and guide the design controls for robotics and industrial automation equipment to ensure functional safety.
  • Perform hazard and risk assessments, and safety analyses of robotics and industrial automation equipment.
  • Write safety requirement specifications, safety management plans, safety concepts, and safety verification and validation plans.
  • Define safety requirements, design safety architectures, and perform detailed safety design activities.
  • Conduct qualitative and quantitative analysis to ensure satisfaction of SILs and Performance Level targets.
  • Design safe-rated sensing and perception, stability control, and diagnostic measures.
  • Apply industry consensus standards for the development lifecycle of robotic control systems and advise developers on processes.
  • Participate in interdisciplinary teams to execute product designs from concept to production, including design, prototype, test, validation, and certification.
  • Write or review functional specifications, design verification plans, and test procedures.
  • Analyze failure modes of control circuits, their effects, and identify mitigations and diagnostics.
  • Drive projects to closure, ensuring systems can be manufactured, deployed, maintained, and meet regulatory requirements for certification.
  • Ensure control systems comply with machinery safety standards (e.g., ISO 13849, IEC 62061, IEC 61508, IEC 61496, ISO 22440).

Requirements

  • BS degree in electrical engineering or equivalent.
  • 4+ years of experience implementing safety standards.
  • 4+ years of experience with complex electromechanical systems.
  • Demonstrated ability to move seamlessly between levels of abstraction—from system to implementation details.
  • Experience working in a regulated industry (Functional Safety, Military, Medical, Automotive) applying standards to design and work products.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience working in a fast-paced environment similar to a high-tech start-up.
  • Ability to handle ambiguous or undefined challenges through strong problem-solving skills.
  • Experience with electronics systems including PLCs, microcontrollers, FPGAs, and/or mixed-signal designs.
  • Commitment to rigorous testing practices and design process flows.
  • Desire to develop a deep understanding of business and end-user needs.
  • Desire to commit and follow through on complex, multi-year programs.
