About the Role

The Teacher-Mentor role is a high calling to sacrificially serve the next generation by executing the complete model of Elevate Indianapolis. This position involves a balanced 50/50 split between teaching students during the school day and year-round, life-on-life mentoring outside of school. Elevate Indianapolis is specifically seeking a full-time male Teacher-Mentor to mentor young male students. The workflow varies by season, experience level, class load, caseload assignments, and administrative responsibilities, including professional development, team leadership, and planning.

Elevate Indianapolis introduces students to new experiences through Mentoring, Pathways to Purpose, Service Learning, and Sports and Adventure. Teacher-Mentors work to build long-term, life-changing relationships with urban youth, equipping them to thrive and contribute to their community. This role includes serving English language learning students and assisting with post-secondary readiness, including academic check-ins, FAFSA completion, certification and dual credit opportunities, and college and career vision trips.

Responsibilities

General Responsibilities

  • Teaching: Teach and manage classrooms professionally in accordance with Elevate Indianapolis standards and training using the Elevate USA curriculum.
  • Administration: Maintain accurate records and reports, submitted on time with minimal errors.
  • Attendance: Participate attentively and punctually in meetings, classes, and activities.
  • Bonding: Establish, build, and sustain mentoring relationships with students to produce positive holistic life-change.
  • Modeling: Serve as a positive role model and leader, demonstrating outstanding ethics, organizational values, character, and behavior.
  • Representation: Represent Elevate Indianapolis professionally in classrooms, during site visits, at community collaborations, and at community functions.
  • Professional Development: Participate in and engage with assigned learning opportunities.
  • Fiscal Management: Ensure funds are used properly and for allocated purposes according to policy.
  • Programming: Develop and implement programming that promotes the overall mission of Elevate Indianapolis according to the Elevate USA model.
  • Dashboard: Provide accurate weekly inputs to the Thriving Youth Dashboard Salesforce app, aligned with SMART goal objectives. Maintain and report on metrics as required.
  • Flexibility: Fulfill other responsibilities as assigned with a respectful, team-oriented attitude.
  • Community Collaboration: Engage with vetted community partnerships and volunteers to invest in students' holistic development.

Specific Position Responsibilities

  • Serve as the lead teacher for Elevate classes, preparing engaging lessons in a timely manner using the Elevate USA curriculum with minimal modifications.
  • Mentor a caseload primarily comprised of same-gender students.
  • Cultivate relationships with and coordinate communication among Elevate staff and high school administration. Represent Elevate at school meetings as needed.
  • Proactively share information from the school with appropriate Elevate staff.
  • Ensure academic check-ins for all classes are executed effectively and productively.
  • Maintain a functional, well-decorated, clean, and adequately supplied classroom to foster a welcoming environment for learning and relationship development.
  • Support staff culture by modeling and encouraging communication, professional dress, engaging lesson planning, and participation in student and staff activities.
  • Attend weekly Huddle meetings with high school Teacher-Mentors to review lesson objectives, division of responsibilities, lesson preparation, classroom culture goals, and schedule needs. Add meeting times to the Elevate Indy Team Calendar.

Qualifications

  • Education: Four-year college degree or two-year post-secondary degree with teaching experience preferred, but not required.
  • Experience: Minimum of two years’ experience in youth service; certifications or education in youth services preferred.
  • Commitment: Willingness to provide 24/7/365 availability to support student relationships, including summer programs. This is a 12-month position.
  • Driver’s License: Valid Indiana Driver’s License and proof of insurance maintained.
  • Travel: Willingness to attend professional development and student programming that may require overnight, out-of-state travel.

Skills

  • Ability to connect with urban youth; urban youth experience preferred.
  • Spanish-speaking dual-language skills preferred to serve English language learning students.
  • Mastery of communication skills, including written, verbal, and presentation.
  • Willingness to be coached and eagerness to learn new information.
  • Strong personal relationship skills to manage and work with a wide variety of people, professionals, and students.
  • Passion and commitment to positively change culture and graduation rates in IPS.
  • Ability to work and contribute to a team environment.
  • Ability to manage a variety of projects and goals alongside personal and team responsibilities.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel, Outlook, and email.
  • Ability to drive and transport students/staff using 15-passenger shuttles and seven-passenger minivans.
  • Completion of annual 360 review performance process.

Benefits

  • Salary: $45,000–$65,000, depending on experience. Premium compensation for staff available after school through 7 PM, with staggered start times 2 days a week, and 4–5 hours of weekend mentoring at times.
