About the role

This position works with a multidisciplinary team of attending hospitalists, nurse practitioners, and respiratory therapists to coordinate and oversee ventilator weaning and the care of patients with respiratory diseases at NYC Health Hospitals | Carter, a 5-Star CMS-rated facility in Harlem. The role includes managing acute and chronic respiratory failure, asthma, emphysema, pneumonia, lung cancers, and other disorders; developing treatment plans; providing consulting services; and performing diagnostic and therapeutic procedures such as bronchoscopy, thoracentesis, and point-of-care ultrasound.

Responsibilities

  • Coordinate and oversee ventilator weaning for medically complex patients.
  • Manage respiratory diseases including acute and chronic respiratory failure, asthma, emphysema, pneumonia, lung cancers, and other disorders.
  • Develop and deliver treatment plans including respiratory therapies, antibiotics, steroids, and other medications.
  • Provide consulting services to other providers.
  • Provide biweekly oversight of chronically ventilated residents in the Skilled Nursing Facility.
  • Perform diagnostic and therapeutic procedures as required and credentialed (e.g., bronchoscopy, thoracentesis, ultrasound including POCUS).
  • Interact with patients, residents, families, workforce members, and others in alignment with the organization’s ICARE values.
  • Document care and services rendered in the medical record accurately and in a timely manner.
  • Collaborate with interdisciplinary teams during admission, meetings, and patient/family education.
  • Communicate effectively and compassionately with patients, residents, and their loved ones regarding changes in condition and updates.
  • Participate in team meetings/huddles to disseminate information.
  • Maintain professional competence through continuing education and other learning experiences.
  • Complete all mandatory training and in-services assigned in a timely manner.
  • Seek career growth through post-acute care applicable certifications.
  • Demonstrate safety awareness and follow protocols for fire, disaster, adverse events, infection control, and other safety practices.
  • Assist in the orientation and training of new or novice staff through unit-based education and competency.
  • Participate actively in quality assurance and performance improvement activities.

Requirements

  • Active New York State medical licensure.
  • Board Certified or Board Eligible in Pulmonary Medicine.

Pay

Salary range: $306,000 – $320,000 per year.
