Full Time Night Custodian

About the role

The Night Custodian is responsible for the overall cleanliness of the District's buildings, equipment, and furnishings. Ensures that cleaning supplies are stocked, equipment is functional, and the building is operational and ready for the next shift.

Responsibilities

• Cleans assigned facilities and/or grounds (sweeps, mops, and/or vacuums floors; dusts and cleans offices, classrooms, and other work areas; strips, restores, and polishes floors as scheduled; collects and removes waste; washes walls, windows, and doors).
• Disinfects required surfaces and fixtures.
• Maintains supplies and equipment.
• Monitors students and staff in and around work areas to prevent injuries and ensure site safety.
• Performs summer maintenance/cleaning to prepare facilities for the next school year.
• Participates in training to convey and gather information required to perform job functions.
• Performs minor maintenance on custodial equipment, classroom furniture, and fixtures (e.g., ceiling tiles, filters, light bulbs).
• Clears snow and salts walkways around the building to maintain safety and efficiency.
• Secures the building by ensuring all doors and windows are shut and latched.
• Wears appropriate Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) and uses all safety measures when performing tasks.
• Performs any other tasks requested for the assigned shift.
• Promotes the safety, health, and comfort of students and employees.

Requirements

• High School diploma or equivalent.
• Current and valid Illinois Driver’s License.
• Ability to perform essential job duties satisfactorily, including physical demands such as lifting up to 50 pounds and occasionally more than 75 pounds.
• Pass an employment physical and TB test, as well as a criminal justice fingerprint/background check.

Skills

• Operating equipment and materials used in industrial maintenance.
• Adhering to safety practices and preparing/maintaining accurate records.
• Communication skills, including writing reports, reading and interpreting information, and displaying courtesy and tact.
• Performing basic math calculations (fractions, percents, ratios).
• Knowledge of industrial cleaning methods (floor and carpet care), basic tools for minor repairs, and safety practices.
• Ability to schedule activities, adapt to changing priorities, and meet deadlines.
• Flexibility to work with diverse individuals and operate various types of job-related equipment.
• Problem-solving to identify issues and create action plans.

Work Environment

• Frequent physical demands: lifting, carrying, pushing, pulling, climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, and crawling.
• Approximate time distribution: 5% sitting, 75% walking, 20% standing.
• Exposure to moving mechanical parts, outside weather conditions, wet/humid conditions, fumes, airborne particles, toxic/caustic chemicals, and risk of electrical shock.
• Moderate noise level.

This position is part of the Yorkville CBA and follows Benefit Schedule A.

Pay

Starting hourly rate: $19.00 per hour. FLSA status: Non-Exempt.

Schedule

Night shift as determined by the Building Operations Supervisor.
