Full Time Lifeguard - Brightwater Lagoon

About the role

Lifeguards protect guests by maintaining continuous surveillance of assigned aquatic zones, enforcing safety rules, recognizing distress, and performing rescues and emergency care within certification and training. Training will be provided to any applicants passing the American Red Cross swim test.

Responsibilities

  • Maintain continuous, active surveillance of the assigned zone using approved scanning techniques
  • Recognize and respond immediately to distressed swimmers, submerged guests, injuries, and unsafe conditions
  • Perform water rescues, extrications, CPR/AED, First Aid, and emergency procedures within training
  • Enforce aquatic and facility rules consistently and respectfully
  • Complete rotation, equipment, rescue, first aid, and incident documentation accurately
  • Inspect rescue equipment, communication devices, and assigned areas before and during duty
  • Other duties as assigned, including cleaning and assisting other departments

Requirements

  • Must meet the minimum age established by the certifying agency and applicable law
  • Current lifeguard, CPR/AED, and First Aid certifications accepted by MetroLagoons or ability to obtain before assignment
  • Must successfully complete all required swimming, rescue, written, and practical evaluations
  • Commitment to courteous, attentive, and solution-oriented guest service
  • High school diploma or equivalent (preferred)
  • Must pass the American Red Cross Lifeguard Swim Test (details below) and obtain certification (training provided)
  • Current American Red Cross Lifeguard Certification a plus
  • Must be comfortable working an entire shift outdoors in and around water, including elevated areas
  • Must be able to climb ladders and steps
  • Able to work in a fast-paced environment
  • Flexible availability, including mornings, evenings, weekends, and holidays
  • Proficient communication skills, both verbal and written
  • Proficient in interacting with people of various ages from diverse backgrounds
  • Ability to lift up to 50 lbs

Work Setting and Schedule

This position involves standing/walking for long periods of time outdoors in and around water, including elevated areas in all weather conditions, such as heat, humidity, cold, sun, wind, and rain. Weekends, holidays, early mornings, and evenings are required based on operating needs.

Physical Expectations

  • Continuously scan aquatic areas
  • Enter and exit the water
  • Swim and retrieve submerged objects
  • Perform rescues and assist guests as required by the certifying agency and job-specific skills test
  • Kneel, reach, and lift or assist guests
  • Climb ladders and steps

American Red Cross Lifeguard Swim Test

Event 1: Swim-Tread-Swim

  • Jump into the water from the side, fully submerge, recover to the surface, and swim 150 yards.
  • After swimming 150 yards, maintain position at the surface of the water for 2 minutes by treading, without support.
  • After treading for 2 minutes, swim an additional 50 yards.
  • While swimming, keep your face in the water and demonstrate proper breath control. You may use front crawl, breaststroke, or a combination of both. Swimming on the back or side is not permitted. Swim goggles are allowed.
  • While treading, use only your legs, keeping your hands placed under your armpits, and your head must remain above the water.

Event 2: Timed Event

  • Arrange a 20-yard swim distance and place a 10-pound object at a minimum depth of 7 to 10 feet.
  • Goggles are not permitted for this event.
  • You have 1 minute, 40 seconds to complete the following:
    • Swim 20 yards (your face may be in or out of the water).
    • Perform a surface dive (feet-first or head-first) to a depth of 7 to 10 feet to retrieve a 10-pound object.
    • Return to the surface and swim 20 yards on your back to the starting point, holding the object at the surface with both hands and keeping your face at or near the surface. Swimming underwater during this distance is not allowed.
    • Exit the water without using a ladder or steps.
