Cook Summary

The Cook plays an integral role in the success of our team, our community, and creating a place our residents are proud to call home. The primary purpose of this position is to prepare cold food, bakery, and salad items.

Essential Job Functions

  • Prepare meals that follow the menus and recipes.
  • Ensure food is taste and temperature palatable and appetizing in appearance.
  • Inspect special diet trays to ensure the correct diet is served to the residents.
  • Serve food in accordance with established portion control procedures.
  • Prepare food for therapeutic diets in accordance with planned menus.
  • Prepare food in accordance with standardized recipes and special diet orders.
  • Prepare cold item foods, bakery, and salad items.
  • Cook hot foods as directed by Supervisor(s).
  • Follow culinary practices, procedures, and food safety.
  • Adhere to food service timelines.
  • Prepare and serve only authorized food substitutions to residents who refuse daily menu food options.
  • Serve meals to residents and guests as needed.
  • Auxiliary in food preparation for special meals, parties, and events.
  • Prepare food in accordance with sanitary regulations and Food ServSafe regulations.
  • Maintain work areas in a clean and safe manner.
  • Prepare and assist with food prep for the upcoming meal and day.
  • Auxiliary in the inventory and replenishment process for food and supplies.
  • Ensure that food and supplies for the next meal are readily available.
  • Store incoming food and supplies as needed.

Knowledge and Critical Skills

  • Make independent decisions and follow instructions.
  • Deal tactfully with personnel, residents, family members, visitors, government agencies/personnel, and the public.
  • Work with ill, disabled, elderly, and emotionally upset people within the facility.
  • Communicate in a manner sufficient for effective communication with supervisors, team members, residents, and families.

Education and Experience

  • Meet all applicable state and federal requirements for this position.
  • Six months experience in a commercial kitchen preferred.
  • Knowledgeable in cooking large quantities of food with little to no direction on how to cook the recipes.
  • Knowledgeable of culinary practices, procedures, and food safety.

Supervisory Responsibility

This position does not have direct reports or supervisory requirements.

Working Conditions and Physical Demands

  • Tasks assigned to this position may involve potential and/or direct exposure to blood, body fluids, infectious diseases, air contaminants, and hazardous chemicals.
  • Physical Activities: Must be able to frequently lift/carry 30 lbs. and occasionally lift/carry 50 lbs. Must be able to frequently push/pull up to 30 lbs. and occasionally push/pull up to 50 lbs. Bending/twisting/stooping Reaching at or below the shoulder Frequently standing or walking.

Cognitive Requirements

  • Executes tasks independently.
  • Expresses oneself clearly and effectively.

Environmental Requirements

  • May be exposed to heat from kitchen equipment and cold from kitchen freezer.
  • May work outdoor weather conditions (e.g., BBQ).
  • Moderate noise level.
