Full Time Certified Medical Assistant - CMA

Healogics is the largest provider of advanced wound care services in the United States, treating more than 300,000 chronic wound patients annually across over 600 sites. With an aging society, obesity and diabetes on the rise, and an uptick in surgical procedures, the number of patients with non-healing wounds that would benefit from expert care is dramatically increasing. About the role

The Certified Medical Assistant provides and coordinates the delivery of clinical and non-clinical services under the direction of the Registered Nurse (RN) or Provider. This position also performs a variety of clerical duties to assist the Wound Care Center’s staff.

All Healogics employees must perform their job responsibilities according to all Healogics policies, hospital policies, accrediting organizations, federal and state regulations, and Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) guidelines, as applicable.

Responsibilities

• Performs pre-certification duties such as receiving referrals on new patients, verifying patient coverage, and communicating with primary care providers and insurance companies as needed to obtain authorization for the initial visit.
• Assists the RN or LPN/LVN during the patient’s intake/discharge process:
  • Collecting, recording, and reporting data that includes vitals (Temperature, Pulse, Respiration, Blood Pressure) and blood sugar readings.
  • Taking wound photography and measurement.
  • Tracking observed responses to treatment.
  • Recording care given, including participation in wound care/Hyperbaric plan.
  • Reporting unusual observations or changes in patient condition/behavior.
  • Collecting specimens as requested.
  • Assisting in vein clinic as assigned after completing Healogics Vein Clinic training.
• Tracks patient visit information, including entering documentation in database systems or on paper forms and copying documentation to the hospital billing department.
• Performs recertification/extension of additional services:
  • Sending clinical information and photographs to the appropriate insurance company with requests for extension of visit numbers or time.
  • Documenting authorization information on log upon receipt of extension and copying the update to patient finance and attending wound center Medical Doctor (MD).
  • Handling insurance recertifications.
• Performs Hyperbaric Oxygen therapy-related duties as needed, upon completion of required Healogics training.
• Completes unit tasks such as cleaning exam areas, hyperbaric gurneys and chambers, processing sterile instruments, and performing other required tasks.
• Assists the center’s staff with clerical services handled by Front Office Coordinators as needed:
  • Answering phones, greeting patients and visitors, routing calls to appropriate staff, and scheduling patient appointments.
  • Coding and insurance processing; obtaining insurance information from patients and verifying insurance for services.
  • Coordinating patient ancillary testing with other hospital departments.
  • Entering, verifying, and reconciling patient charges.
  • Assembling new charts, maintaining and filing existing charts, “spot checking” charts for data completeness and signatures.
  • Entering data into proprietary and hospital data systems (patient registration) as directed, auditing data entry, and generating reports.
  • Maintaining office equipment and supplies, as well as ordering as needed.
• Communicates regularly with payors, updates/documents outcomes, and relates customer concerns and needs to medical personnel, tracking them in appropriate databases to ensure satisfactory outcomes.
• May function as a Documentation Assistant (scribe) in accordance with Healogics policy.
• Performs other duties as required.

Clinical Duties (Varying By State)

• Information gathering for intake and discharge.
• Explaining treatment procedures to patients.
• Preparing patients for examination.
• Assisting the Provider or RN during the exam.
• Collecting and preparing laboratory specimens.
• Performing basic laboratory tests.
• Removing and changing dressings.

Requirements

• High School Diploma or General Education Development (GED).
• Graduate from a Medical Assistant program approved by the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Programs (CAAHEP) or by the Accrediting Bureau of Health Education Schools (ABHES).
• Current Certified Medical Assistant (CMA) certification – to maintain throughout the duration of employment in the position (as applicable in state of practice).
• Six (6) or more months of related experience in an acute hospital, rehabilitation hospital, or skilled nursing unit preferred.

Pay

The hourly rate for this position generally ranges between $17.96 and $22.26 per hour. This range is an estimate based on potential employee qualifications, including education, experience, geography, as well as operational needs and other considerations permitted by law.
