About the role
The Lead Building Engineer ensures the continuous operational reliability, safety, and physical appeal of the hotel property. Combining hands-on technical expertise with supervisory leadership, this role oversees the maintenance of all mechanical, electrical, plumbing, HVAC, and life-safety systems. The Lead Engineer works closely with department heads to maintain high guest satisfaction, prevent costly equipment downtime, and foster a safe, comfortable environment for guests and staff alike.
Responsibilities
The Lead Building Engineer will be responsible for:
- Maintaining, troubleshooting, and performing repairs on complex hotel infrastructure, including boilers, chillers, HVAC/PTAC units, commercial pumps, electrical panels, and plumbing systems
- Executing and tracking proactive preventive maintenance across all guest rooms, public areas, back-of-house spaces, and specialized equipment
- Maintaining water chemistry, filtration, and heating systems in accordance with local health department regulations for pool operations
- Assigning, reviewing, and following up on work orders submitted through the property management or ticketing system
- Mentoring and training maintenance technicians, and leading by example in safety practices and technical precision
- Serving as a primary point of contact for after-hours engineering emergencies, weather-related events, or system alarms
- Ensuring strict compliance with local building codes, OSHA standards, EPA guidelines, and fire/life-safety mandates
- Coordinating with third-party contractors and service technicians, and managing inventory of tools, hardware, and spare parts
Qualifications
The ideal candidate will have:
- Minimum of 2–5 years of experience in facility maintenance, with at least 1–2 years in a hotel/hospitality setting preferred
- Strong working command of MEP (Mechanical, Electrical, Plumbing) systems and building controls
- Certified Pool Operator (CPO) or state equivalent preferred, and specialized trade licenses (Electrical, Plumbing, or HVAC) are a strong plus

- Strong time-management skills with the ability to prioritize guest-facing repairs
- Professional communication and guest-service orientation
- Basic computer applications skills
Working Conditions & Physical Demands
The Lead Building Engineer will be required to:
- Stand, walk, climb ladders, and lift up to 50 lbs regularly
- Work in tight mechanical spaces, on roofs, or in high-noise equipment rooms
- Be flexible to work varied shifts, including weekends, holidays, and on-call rotations as business demands require
