Full Stack Developer, Web Application

About the Role

The University of Iowa Libraries is seeking a highly skilled Full Stack Web Application Developer to join the Library Information Technology (LIT) team. This role involves designing, developing, testing, debugging, and troubleshooting web-based applications that support the library’s mission to provide accessible and innovative research tools and resources. The successful candidate will conduct system analysis, contribute to application architecture, and offer technical leadership and training to library staff. They will work closely with stakeholders to develop solutions that enhance public discovery, access, and engagement with library resources. Supported applications include both commercial and open-source systems, such as the Iowa Digital Library (Islandora) and ArchivesSpace, among others. The position reports to the Administrative Lead and plays a key role in supporting the technological infrastructure that underpins library operations and services.

Responsibilities

• Design, develop, and support backend technologies, including database management and server configurations
• Recommend, implement, and maintain Content Management Systems (CMS) such as WordPress, Drupal, Omeka, and LibApps
• Install and configure both vended and open-source library web applications
• Create functional and technical specifications for local development projects, involving input from library staff and stakeholders
• Modify, write, and document program code to meet project requirements
• Identify and recommend tools, languages, and technologies to improve application development and support processes
• Automate development environment setup and maintenance tasks
• Provide backup system administration support and ensure system reliability
• Offer second-tier support to technical services and public services staff maintaining library data
• Deliver third-tier support to students, faculty, and library users, troubleshooting issues and providing guidance

Requirements

• Bachelor’s degree or equivalent combination of education and experience
• Minimum of 2 years experience developing application solutions
• Proficiency in programming languages such as PHP, Python, HTML, JavaScript, CSS, Ruby on Rails, etc.
• Experience working with relational databases like Oracle, MySQL, PostgreSQL
• Knowledge of web publishing technologies including Apache, IIS, and AWS
• Demonstrated ability to support a welcoming and respectful environment
• Strong communication skills to interact with users from diverse technological backgrounds
