About the role

This posting seeks to fill a management-level vacancy in the Fuels Infrastructure Department of the Fuels Division at Hawaiian Electric Company at either the Fuels Engineer II or Senior Fuels Engineer level, whichever best matches the candidate’s qualifications.

Responsibilities

• Plans and executes projects and programs to ensure all applicable regulatory requirements are met for fuel infrastructure.
• Manages fuel infrastructure-related maintenance work, prepares work packages and construction documents, bids and awards contracts, and coordinates resource allocation and vendor/consultant work.
• Ensures contractors comply with all regulations applicable to HECO fuel infrastructure.
• Maintains records to document compliance with U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT) and U.S. Coast Guard (USCG) regulations.
• Performs U.S. DOT pipeline compliance activities, including program audits, SCADA and Leak Detection System maintenance, and Right-of-Way inspections.
• Manages communications and public awareness programs related to pipelines.
• Provides updates and training on new U.S. DOT and USCG regulations to relevant departments.
• Conducts regular reviews of pipeline compliance procedures and documentation.
• Performs economic evaluations, including cost/benefit analyses, and maintains budget and expense records.
• Develops, monitors, and refines condition assessment programs for critical plant equipment.
• Provides on-site technical support and identifies opportunities to improve operational and maintenance practices.
• Develops relationships with regulators and manages responses to inspections.
• Provides training for department personnel and promotes teamwork and self-directed workforce initiatives.
• Participates in company emergency response activities as assigned.

Requirements

Fuels Engineer II

• Thorough knowledge of engineering principles and practices, including engineering design, project management, and construction methods (typically acquired through a bachelor’s degree in engineering or equivalent).
• Working knowledge of federal, state, industry, and company regulations, codes, and practices.
• General troubleshooting skills and ability to perform root-cause analyses.
• Must have or be able to qualify for a State of Hawaii driver’s license and meet company driving standards.
• Ability to adapt to rapidly changing priorities in a demanding work environment.
• Strong verbal and written communication skills for internal and external stakeholders.
• In-depth analytical and computational skills for technical writing, statistical computations, and economic analysis.
• Working knowledge of personal computers, mainframe systems, and related software (e.g., spreadsheets, word processing).
• Extensive (13+ years) experience in fuel infrastructure operations and maintenance. A bachelor’s degree in engineering may substitute for eight years of experience.

Senior Fuels Engineer

• Extensive knowledge of engineering principles and practices, including fluid statics/dynamics, thermodynamics, material properties, and construction methods (typically acquired through a bachelor’s degree in engineering or equivalent).
• Extensive knowledge of fuel specialty areas, such as pipeline integrity management and above-ground storage tank construction, inspection, and repair.
• Thorough knowledge of federal, state, industry, and company regulations, codes, and practices.
• Demonstrated leadership skills, decision-making ability, and experience working with diverse teams.
• Ability to evaluate and apply industry developments for operational and maintenance optimization.
• General troubleshooting skills and ability to perform root-cause analyses.
• In-depth analytical, computational, and organizational skills for technical writing, record-keeping, and economic analyses.
• Strong verbal and written communication skills, including presentation and facilitation abilities.
• Must have or be able to qualify for a State of Hawaii driver’s license and meet company driving standards.
• Ability to adapt to rapidly changing priorities in a demanding work environment.
• Working knowledge of personal computers, mainframe systems, and related software (e.g., spreadsheets, word processing).
• Extensive (12+ years) experience in fuel infrastructure operations and maintenance, with emphasis on integrity management planning and implementation. Equivalent education and work experience may substitute for a bachelor’s degree. A Hawaii Professional Engineering license may be credited toward experience.

Pay

The hiring range for the Fuels Engineer II position is $99,900 to $127,500. The hiring range for the Senior Fuels Engineer position is $109,900 to $142,600. The selected candidate will be placed according to skills and qualifications.
