Job Description

This position involves supervising the Nursing Department. The responsibilities include interpreting hospital and nursing policies independently, acting as a link between staff and the Chief Nursing Officer, participating in performance improvement activities, and working under limited supervision.

Job Qualifications

  • Education: Graduate of an accredited school of nursing required; Registered Nurse currently licensed by the State of Texas or other compact state; Current BLS required; ACLS, PALS (or ENPC) and TNCC required but can be obtained within the first 12 months of employment; Five years of nursing experience required including Acute Care, Telemetry, and Emergency Department nursing.

  • Knowledge, Skill, and Ability: General knowledge of electronic equipment, computer hardware, and software; knowledge of the structure and content of the English language including the meaning and spelling of words, rules of composition, and grammar. Possesses skills of active listening, critical thinking, oral comprehension, and time management.

Physical and Mental Requirements

  • Exerting 50-100 lbs. of force occasionally or up to 50 lbs. of force frequently. May involve exerting in excess of 100 lbs. of force in some situations. Up to 20 lbs. of force to constantly move objects.

Shows compassion and understanding in words. The tone of voice directly impacts the way a message is received. Listens carefully to others. Keeps conversations positive and constructive; when discussing problems or issues, focuses on potential solutions. Avoids gossiping, complaining and the use of profanity.

  • Safety: Maintains a neat, organized and safe work area. Follows safety policies. Makes the effort to straighten up the facility (i.e., pick up items off the floor, wipe up spills, ensure the restrooms are stocked, put trash in trash cans, return equipment to proper place). Uses proper lifting techniques (e.g. utilize appropriate transfer devices, lift equipment and body mechanics). Reports all accidents and safety hazards promptly. Takes appropriate actions to correct or prevent recurrence.

  • Timekeeping: Uses time clock consistently when coming to work, leaving work, lunch breaks, and anytime leaving the facility grounds for personal reasons. Adjustments, Leave Requests, etc. are turned in on time. If not using clock, hours are turned in timely.

Essential Functions

  • Affords assistance with nurse staffing, including onboarding, discipline, and termination processes. Assists with nursing staff performance evaluations, monitors attendance of mandatory trainings, medication scan rates, and medications errors.

  • Assists with the orientation of new employees on shift and competency evaluations, meeting training needs.

  • Assists with managing the nursing schedule, assisting nursing staff with self-scheduling, and ensuring shifts are covered through PRN or overtime once all full and part-time staff have self-scheduled.

  • Maintains, approves, and reviews nursing payroll, including ED and Charge Nurse hours and OP float hours.

  • Assists with Annual Skills Fair, including identification of education needs, development of the fair, and checkoffs for staff.

  • Assists with developing departmental job descriptions, policies, procedures, and practices.

  • Assists with call rotation for nursing administration, including staffing needs throughout the shift in relation to patient census and staff call-ins and call coverage for non-business hours.

  • Assists with monitoring quality assurance for the nursing department, including ED/Trauma through patient chart and quality audits. Reports findings as needed to the appropriate department.

  • Functions as a resource for nursing staff, including assisting in nursing care when needed, responding to Code Blue, obtaining supplies from Central Supply and medications from Pharmacy after hours, and solving administrative/operational problems.

  • Fulfills the role as a liaison between administration, patients, physicians, and other healthcare providers.

  • Attends hospital committee meetings and represents the nursing department as assigned.

  • Covers Cardiac Rehab as assigned, including patient assessment, exercise supervision, monitoring patients' telemetry, and reporting/addressing cardiac issues as identified, and required documentation.

  • Keeps professionally current by attending continuing education programs, seminars, and workshops.
