Qualifications
- Minimum of one to two years of patient registration experience in a medical office or healthcare setting
- Ability to communicate effectively with physicians, patients, and the public, and establish good working relationships with internal and external customers
- Knowledge of insurance rules and regulations, medical terminology, and computer scheduling systems
- High School Diploma or GED
- Bilingual (English/Spanish) strongly preferred
- Previous experience in collecting money is preferred
Responsibilities
- Promptly greet and acknowledge patients, informing MAs and providers of patient arrivals
- Instruct patients in completing medical history and patient information forms, making necessary corrections to patient accounts
- Obtain accurate, complete demographic and insurance information, ensuring all necessary documents are populated and signed correctly
- Verify that all required authorizations and/or referrals are attached to the appointment for the date of service
- Identify and collect co-payments, co-insurances, and past-due account balances
- Explain financial requirements to patients and address billing and insurance questions; refer complex questions to Site Billing Specialist
- Evaluate patient financial status and establish payment plans based on authority levels
- Accurately complete and interpret insurance verification and benefits
- Notify patients, family members, physicians, and supervisors of network insurance coverage issues that may reduce coverage
- Scan all new or updated patient information into the computer (including photo ID, insurance cards, referrals, and patient paperwork)
- Schedule follow-up appointments, review patient insurance coverage, notify patients if services require authorization or referral, and send requests to PCP
- Maintain general knowledge of insurance plans accepted by the organization
- Communicate with patients in the lobby if the physician or provider is running behind schedule
- Maintain a secure and accurate cash drawer, balancing it daily and closing the batch
- Maintain strictest patient confidentiality
- Maintain a clean and organized front office workspace
- Follow established Front Office Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs)
- Demonstrate current competencies for the job position, including a general understanding of insurance requirements
