Front-End Software Engineer (3075)
SEPTA is the sixth-largest transportation system in the U.S., connecting communities across a 2,200-square-mile service region. We are at the forefront of innovation in the transit industry, ensuring reliable and efficient services while driving economic growth in the Philadelphia region.
About the role
We are seeking a talented Front-End Software Engineer to design, build, and maintain high-quality user interfaces for our web applications. In this role, you will bridge the gap between design and technical implementation, taking wireframes and translating them into responsive, interactive, and performant code. You will collaborate closely with our backend team to consume RESTful APIs and ensure a seamless, asynchronous end-user experience.
Responsibilities
- Build robust and reusable UI components using modern frontend frameworks like Angular, React, or Vue.
- Craft highly responsive and pixel-perfect layouts using utility-first or component-based CSS frameworks such as Tailwind CSS or Bootstrap.
- Work directly from Figma design files to accurately extract asset specs, layout variables, and interactive prototypes.
- Build and maintain web applications that comply with web accessibility (WCAG) standards to ensure an inclusive user experience.
- Connect client-side applications to complex data layers by consuming both standard RESTful APIs and flexible GraphQL endpoints.
- Ensure web applications are highly optimized for maximum speed, scalability, and cross-browser compatibility.
- Partner with UI/UX designers and backend developers (utilizing environments like Laravel, Node.js, or similar architectures) to scope and refine new application features.
- Write clean, maintainable, and well-documented code while executing unit tests to ensure stability.
Requirements
- B.A. or B.S. Degree in Information Systems, Computer Science, Engineering, or related field and three (3) to five (5) years of software engineering experience. An equivalent combination of experience and education may be considered in lieu of the above requirement.
- Strong proficiency in core web technologies including JavaScript (ES6+), TypeScript, HTML5, and CSS3.
- 2+ years of production experience with Angular (v14+) or adjacent frameworks like React or Vue.js.
- Expert-level knowledge of utility/responsive frameworks like Tailwind CSS or Bootstrap, along with CSS preprocessors like SASS/SCSS.
- Deep understanding of handling asynchronous HTTP requests, data serialization, and state tracking (e.g., via RxJS, NgRx, Axios, or native Fetch).
- Direct experience interacting with standard RESTful structures typically served by frameworks like Laravel, Express, or Django.
- Direct experience working with Figma or similar (inspecting layouts, exporting assets, and understanding design systems).
- Strong understanding of semantic HTML, ARIA attributes, and testing for WCAG 2.1 AA compliance.
- Proficient handling of code management workflows via Git and platform ecosystems like GitHub or GitLab.
Ideal Qualifications
- Familiarity with the Laravel ecosystem (e.g., Blade templating, Vite configuration, or Inertia.js integration models).
- Experience with frontend automated testing suites using tools like Jest, Cypress, or Jasmine.
- Knowledge of web accessibility compliance rules based on WCAG standards.
Benefits
- Comprehensive Healthcare Coverage – Medical, prescription, dental, and vision plans with little to no employee premiums.
- Retirement Security – Participate in a Defined Benefit Pension Plan and a 457B Deferred Compensation Plan.
- Paid parental leave, generous vacation time, and paid holidays.
- Wellness programs and resources to support physical, mental, and emotional well-being.
- Tuition reimbursement to support education and career advancement.
- Student Loan Assistance – Positions qualify for the Public Service Loan Forgiveness (PSLF) program.
- Free SEPTA Transportation Pass, providing unlimited access to all SEPTA services.
