From Screen-Ed to Netflix: Lauren’s Dept Q Prop Trainer journey
About the programme
Through the Lens (TTL) community programmes at Screen Education Edinburgh equip young people and adult learners with the skills and confidence to express themselves through film, whether documentary or fiction. With the support of Film Tutors, learners are guided through every step of the production process—writing, directing, and shooting their own short films.
Participants often find the environment welcoming and accessible, even without prior film experience. Lauren, an adult learner with no background in film, shared how the supportive group dynamic allowed her to write and direct 1 in 10, a short film based on her personal experience with endometriosis. Reflecting on the experience, she said, “There wouldn’t be anything for me that would allow me to do something like this without going back to study—so the benefits are just amazing, just to be able to relight that passion.”
You can watch 1 in 10 in the Film Archive and see how the short was made in the behind-the-scenes video.
Progression opportunities
Alumni of Screen Education Edinburgh, like Lauren, may progress to advanced programmes such as the Dept. Q Green Light Programme. Supported by Screen Scotland, Sony Pictures Television, and Netflix, this paid four-week opportunity provides hands-on industry experience for participants aged 18 and over. The programme offers insight into building a career in film and television production through department rotations on high-profile productions.
Lauren shadowed the Props department, gaining practical skills in set dressing, striking sets, maintaining continuity, preparing props for filming, and organizing the props store. “My favourite part was ageing props, using techniques such as spray painting, tea staining, and painting to create realistic worn and weathered effects,” she said. At the end of the programme, participants took part in debrief days to refine their skills and pursue careers in their chosen departments.
Lauren’s experience led to a daily role in the Props department, eventually securing a full-time contract on a Netflix production. “I’m so incredibly grateful to Screen Education Edinburgh for giving me this opportunity, which has led to me working on a high-end Netflix production,” she says.
