About the role

Assist special education teacher in providing for the physical and instructional needs of students with disabilities in a special education setting.

Responsibilities

  • Help teacher prepare instructional materials.
  • Help teacher keep administrative records and prepare required reports.
  • Auxiliary support to substitute teachers.
  • Assistance to students with physical disabilities according to their needs (may require some lifting).
  • Support students’ instructional needs in accordance with their Individualized Educational Plans (IEPs).
  • Auxiliary support to students with personal care as appropriate.
  • Assure learning and adaptation to each student’s special needs.
  • Work with individual students or small groups.
  • Supervise students throughout the school day, inside and outside the classroom.
  • Inform teacher of special needs or problems of individual students.

Requirements

  • High School diploma or GED.
  • Associates degree or two years of higher education preferred.
  • If hired, must complete SBEC certification process to obtain an Educational Aide Certification.

Special Knowledge/Skills

  • Ability to work with children with disabilities.
  • Ability to follow verbal and written instructions.
  • Ability to communicate effectively.
  • Knowledge of general office equipment.
  • Ability to work in a stressful environment.
  • Frequent standing, stooping, bending, kneeling, pushing, and pulling.
  • Must be able to lift 25lbs.

  • Assume shared responsibility for the health, safety, and confidentiality of all students and adults.
  • Implement, support, and document behavioral intervention strategies.
  • Provide school health, related, and personal care services.
