Primary Functions
To instruct athletes in the fundamental skills, strategy and physical training necessary for them to realize a degree of individual and team success while at the same time helping the athlete to achieve an increased level of self-esteem, an appreciation for the values of sportsmanship and discipline.
Major Duties And Responsibilities
- Affirm the head coach in carrying out his/her responsibilities.
- Assists the head coach in the issuing, collection, and storage of all equipment.
- Responsible for knowing the existing state and league regulations and at all times abides by them.
- Aid the head coach and athletic director in scheduling contests and practices.
- Maintains proper safeguards for maintaining and protection of assigned equipment sites.
- Prepares for scheduled sport events and practices and adheres to scheduled facility times.
- Makes recommendations to the head coach for awards.
- Recommends to the head coach budgetary items for next year in his/her area of the program.
- Affords assistance to the head coach in explaining the team's training rules, "Code of Conduct", as stated in the student-athlete handbook, CIAC eligibility rules, and procedures for participation in athletics to all members of the team.
- Ensures thorough knowledge and implementation of the policies and procedures in the student-athlete handbook.
- Maintains cleanliness and monitors athletes in all athletic work areas.
- Understands the proper administrative line of command and refers all student and parent requests or grievances through proper channels.
- Never criticizes, admonishes or argues with the head coach or any staff member in the presence of players or parents.
- Responsible for the actions and conduct of the athletes whenever they are under his/her jurisdiction.
- Responsible for the general health and welfare of students in his/her sport and gives appropriate attention to athletes who are injured, ill or otherwise incapacitated.
- Attends all staff meetings and carries out scouting assignments as outlined by the head coach.
- Instills in each player a respect for equipment and school property, its care and use.
- Affords assistance to the head coach in maintaining necessary paperwork, i.e. attendance records, inventory of uniforms and equipment, parent permission forms, etc.
Qualifications
- Completion of Module 15 Concussion Management
- Valid Connecticut coaching certification
- Completion of first aid/CPR training approved by Connecticut State Department of Education
Reports To
The athletic director, who provides a final evaluation to the principal.
