Fresh Department Clerk - Store #40 Part-Time
About the role
Northgate Markets opened its first store on January 2nd, 1980, in Anaheim, CA, and now operates 40+ stores across four counties: Los Angeles, Orange, San Diego, and the Inland Empire. We offer a full-service supermarket with a large meat department, bakery, tortilleria, and prepared foods, along with a significant selection of domestic and imported Latin American grocery goods.
Essential Duties And Responsibilities
- Operate according to store rules and comply with health and civil code regulations.
- Adhere to weights and measure laws and follow approved procedures for weighing, wrapping, pricing, and restocking cases.
- Handle damaged and spoiled products according to company policy and assist in controlling the level of damaged goods.
- Rotate perishable merchandise in accordance with department policy and product code dates, pulling out-of-code merchandise following FIFO rules.
- Greet all customers and maintain good customer relations by providing prompt and courteous service and assistance.
- Wait on customers, including slicing, cutting, weighing, packaging, and labeling merchandise.
- Use and maintain equipment in good working order, reporting any maintenance issues to the store director or key person in charge.
- Comply with safety policies and procedures, reading and adhering to Safety Committee bulletins.

- Ability to hear, speak, and understand the spoken word in English to respond to pages for assistance, accommodate verbal requests from customers, answer telephones, and communicate effectively with others.
- Ability to read, write, analyze, interpret, and understand the English language to read and understand instructions for operating electronic equipment and tools, company handbooks, policies, and procedures, and other written job related documents.
- Knowledge of various cuts and types of meat products sold in the department, including recommended uses or cooking methods and store/department procedures, policies, and operations.
Physical Demands and Work Conditions
- Sit, stand, and use hands to handle, finger, or feel objects, tools, or controls.
- Regularly lift up to 70 pounds, carrying cartons of poultry, cases of meat products, deli merchandise, etc.
- Climb ladders to retrieve items stored in overhead racks such as trays and wrapping material.
- Sweep and mop floors and lift and carry out trash containers to be emptied in an outside bin.
- Have sufficient physical mobility or agility to respond quickly to fire or other emergencies and sufficient dexterity to disassemble, clean, and adjust meat department equipment or clear label jams, etc.
- Work in an environment with fresh fruits, vegetables, and latex gloves without adverse allergic consequences affecting performance.
- Work in environments with continuous duties in refrigerated cutting rooms and storage areas (high humidity), and occasional duties in frozen food storage boxes maintained at temperatures as low as 20°F below zero.
- Work in environments with surfaces that can be wet and slippery.
- Work in environments with moderate noise levels, occasionally experiencing extremely noisy conditions when entering the compressor/machine room to check on refrigeration equipment or working with power tools and equipment.
