Freelance Travel Writer
Bazaarist is a global travel platform designed to help travelers understand destinations more deeply through firsthand knowledge, practical insight, and locally informed travel content. The platform works with freelance writers and contributors around the world to create destination guides, neighborhood content, food and culture features, transportation advice, research, recommendations, and other travel resources shaped by people who know the places they write about.
About the role
The Freelance Travel Writer is a remote, independent contractor role focused on turning firsthand destination knowledge into accurate, useful, and engaging travel content. Writers may be offered project-based assignments such as destination guides, neighborhood features, food and culture content, transportation information, practical travel advice, destination research, fact-checking, article updates, and other editorial projects. Assignments are based on the destinations you know firsthand, your skills and interests, current coverage needs, and project availability. Writers review the details and compensation for each project before deciding whether to accept it.
This role is well suited to people who know at least one city, region, or destination well and can explain what travelers should realistically know before visiting. Professional travel-writing experience is not required. Strong firsthand knowledge, clear communication, research ability, originality, and reliability matter most. Writers collaborate with the Bazaarist editorial team, follow project briefs and editorial guidelines, incorporate feedback when necessary, and are expected to verify information before submitting work.
Optional Public Contributor Status
Freelance Travel Writers may also be considered for Public Contributor status, but participation is optional and is not required to work with Bazaarist as a writer. Approved Public Contributors maintain a public Bazaarist profile and may qualify for additional categories of paid work, including:
- Traveler Q&A
- Personalized itineraries
- Local recommendations
- Destination research
- Photography
- Short-form video
- Local event coverage
- Contributor features
- Other destination-specific projects
Public profiles may include an approved public name, profile photograph, biography, destination expertise, languages, topics of expertise, and published article contributions. Applicants who prefer to focus exclusively on writing may remain on the Travel Writer track without maintaining a public contributor profile.
Requirements
- Strong written English and the ability to communicate information clearly and naturally.
- Firsthand knowledge of at least one city, region, or destination.
- Ability to explain neighborhoods, culture, food, transportation, customs, and practical travel information in a way that is useful to visitors.
- Strong research and fact-checking skills, including the ability to verify current information before submitting work.
- Ability to produce original writing rather than copied, lightly rewritten, or generic travel content.
- Cultural awareness and respect, including an understanding that customs, experiences, and perspectives may differ within the same destination.
- Reliable access to a computer and stable internet connection.
- Ability to work independently and meet agreed project deadlines.
- Comfort receiving and incorporating editorial feedback.
- Ability and willingness to participate in a 20-minute video interview conducted in English if selected for the interview stage.

Destination Knowledge
You do not necessarily need to currently live in the destination you write about. Applicants may qualify based on cities or destinations they currently live in, previously lived in, grew up in, regularly spend significant time in, or otherwise know through substantial firsthand experience. Writers may also be approved for more than one destination when they can demonstrate strong firsthand knowledge of each location.
Compensation
This is a freelance independent contractor opportunity, not a salaried employment position. Bazaarist offers paid, project-based assignments according to destination coverage needs, writer expertise, project requirements, and availability. Each assignment will show its compensation and project requirements before you decide whether to accept it. Writers are free to accept or decline individual assignments based on their availability, interests, and skills. Payments are issued weekly for completed and approved work. Joining Bazaarist does not guarantee a minimum number of assignments, working hours, or earnings.
