Freelance Senior Mechanical/MEP Engineer: Low-Pressure Steam Heating Consultant

GigBench is seeking an experienced mechanical/MEP engineer to serve as an on‑call consultant for low‑pressure steam heating systems in older New York buildings, particularly pre‑war structures with one‑ and two‑pipe steam. The engagement is ongoing and paid hourly, activated whenever a complex steam heating issue arises, with strong potential to evolve into a long‑term relationship.

Responsibilities

• Provide on‑call consulting support for low‑pressure, one‑ and two‑pipe steam heating systems in older NY buildings.
• Troubleshoot complex steam distribution, steam trap, and condensate return issues.
• Advise on boiler systems, radiators, and related hydronic heating challenges.
• Support design and modernization decisions for existing pre‑war and older building heating plants.
• Engage on an as‑needed, hourly basis rather than a fixed project timeline.

Qualifications

• Senior Mechanical/MEP Engineer; PE preferred.
• Substantial experience with existing‑building HVAC in New York.
• Demonstrated expertise troubleshooting and designing low‑pressure one‑ and two‑pipe steam heating systems in older buildings.
• Familiarity with steam distribution, steam traps, condensate return, and central heating plants.
• Broader experience across other mechanical/heating systems (hydronic heating, boiler systems) is a plus.
• Comfortable working in an ongoing, hourly, as‑needed consulting arrangement.
