About The Role

At KARL STORZ, the FPGA Design Engineer IV is responsible for designing, developing, testing, integrating, and verifying FPGA-based and accelerated imaging solutions for advanced medical video camera systems. This role provides technical leadership across FPGA development, embedded processors, GPU and edge computing platforms, and AI-enabled image processing technologies. The engineer partners with cross-functional teams to develop high-performance imaging solutions that support innovative medical devices while ensuring quality, reliability, and manufacturability.

Key Responsibilities

  • FPGA Design & Development
    • Create synthesizable Verilog/SystemVerilog HDL code for FPGA implementations.
    • Create simulation and verification environments using Verilog/SystemVerilog.
    • Analyze FPGA resource utilization, power consumption, timing, and overall system performance.
    • Troubleshoot FPGA designs and resolve hardware and software integration issues.
    • Select FPGA devices and supporting components that meet system performance and design requirements.
  • System Architecture & Technical Leadership
    • Lead FPGA development efforts and provide technical guidance to FPGA engineering teams.
    • Analyze, decompose, and define FPGA and system requirements.
    • Contribute to overall system architecture, including FPGA, embedded processors, GPU, edge computing, and AI-enabled imaging solutions.
    • Drive improvements to FPGA development processes, methodologies, and architecture.
    • Identify innovative design solutions that improve system performance, scalability, and reliability.
  • AI & Accelerated Computing
    • Utilize approved AI-assisted development tools to improve code quality, verification, documentation, debugging efficiency, and engineering productivity.
    • Contribute to architectures utilizing GPU programming, edge computing, AI inference, and accelerated imaging platforms.
    • Evaluate system tradeoffs related to FPGA resources, GPU performance, power consumption, and overall system requirements.
  • Verification & Quality
    • Develop comprehensive verification strategies to ensure FPGA functionality and performance.
    • Produce clear technical documentation, design specifications, and engineering analysis.
    • Ensure compliance with company quality standards, regulatory requirements, and information security policies.
    • Support integration, validation, and testing activities throughout the product lifecycle.

Qualifications

  • Required:
    • Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, or a related engineering discipline (or equivalent experience).
    • 8+ years of FPGA design experience with a Bachelor's degree, or 7–11 years with a Master's degree.
    • Expert-level experience designing FPGA solutions using Verilog/SystemVerilog.
    • Strong understanding of FPGA architectures, synthesis, timing analysis, and verification methodologies.
    • Extensive experience troubleshooting FPGA, hardware, and software integration challenges.
    • Advanced experience architecting FPGA solutions to meet complex system requirements.
    • Strong knowledge of FPGA design tools, resource optimization, timing closure, and power analysis.
    • Experience utilizing AI-assisted engineering tools to improve development efficiency and quality.
    • Excellent technical documentation and engineering communication skills.
  • PREFERRED:
    • Master's degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, or a related discipline.
    • Experience with GPU programming, AI inference deployment, edge-computing platforms, AMD Versal AI Engines, NVIDIA Jetson/Orin platforms, or similar accelerated computing technologies.
    • Experience developing embedded software for microcontrollers interfacing with FPGA devices.
    • Knowledge of medical device quality systems, including FDA Quality System Regulation (21 CFR Part 820), ISO 13485, and ISO 9001.
    • Experience mentoring engineers and leading technical teams.
