About the role

This position is responsible for the construction, maintenance, and repair of substation equipment and systems. It involves tasks such as concrete foundations, buswork, airbreak switchgear, control cable terminations, and transformer installations.

Responsibilities

  • Works safely while performing new construction, maintenance or repair, testing, adjusting, and troubleshooting work of substation equipment/systems.
  • Handles tasks including concrete foundations, ground grids, and steel erection.
  • Performs buswork (high and low voltage), airbreak/hookstick switchgear, control cable terminations (high/low voltage), control buildings, conduit and duck banks, capacitor bank installations, transformers, regulators, and circuit breakers.
  • Learns and maintains operational experience of various types of heavy equipment such as bucket trucks, backhoes, excavators, and skid steer loaders.
  • Maintains company vehicles, test equipment, and tools in good working condition.
  • Works independently or collaborates with others, often working long hours during emergencies.
  • May lead or coach subordinates on the crew.
  • Traces out phasing in substations and verifies to three-line diagrams.
  • Interprets substation structural drawings and communicates with customers and subordinates.
  • Accurately appraises technical situations and recommends solutions to problems.
  • Determines proper phase shift and rotation in paralleling transformer banks.
  • Runs the job during the absence of the foreman.
  • Establishes grade, elevations, and layouts of foundations and cable troughs in new and existing stations.
  • Works for extended periods in various locations, when requested.
  • Willing to work over-time, long hours during emergencies, and overtime as required.

Requirements

  • Able to perform rigorous physical labor.
  • Capable of climbing and working at heights up to 125 feet above ground.
  • Must supply own personal hand tools required by the company for this work.
  • Must supply own safety toed work boots.
  • Able to lift in excess of 50 lbs.
  • Capable of working in confined spaces/areas.
  • Capable of working independently or with others.
  • Operational experience of various types of heavy equipment.
  • Willing to work over-time or long hours during emergency conditions and/or when requested.

Qualifications

  • Extensive knowledge of construction standard practices, techniques, quality requirements, applicable codes and standards.
  • Capable of working in close proximity of energized substation equipment.
  • Proficient knowledge in all aspects of substation systems.
  • Ability to determine the proper phase shift and rotation in paralleling transformer banks.
  • Capable of running the job during the absence of the Foreman.
  • Establishes grade, elevations, and layout of foundations and cable troughs in new and existing stations.
  • Able to work for extended periods in various locations, when requested.
  • Willing to work over-time when requested.
  • Willing to work outside of the normal work schedule including weekends, holidays, and overtime as required for the position.
