Forward Deployed Finance Engineer, Buyout
About the role
Harvey's Finance Engineering team is the investment‑side counterpart to the Legal Engineering team, composed of former investment professionals who bring real deal experience to Harvey’s prospects and customers. Forward Deployed Finance Engineers lead discovery, demos, pilots, trainings, onboarding, and custom builds alongside Account Executives and Customer Success Managers. They translate real investment work into Harvey solutions, serving as the trust layer across the entire customer lifecycle, from the first pilot to the most complex, custom‑built workflow. The team works on Harvey Deals, a product built from Harvey’s acquisition of Benchmark, where investment teams run deals—screening, underwriting, diligence, and committee materials—in the firm’s own templates and formats with every figure traceable back to the source document. Harvey works with 150+ asset management firms and analyzes 178M+ documents each month; the Finance Engineering team is how that capability meets the way deal teams actually work. This role is the first Finance Engineer dedicated to buyout: you will build the buyout playbook (demo library, workflow templates, use cases), run live pilots, and lead the buyout practice as the team grows. Travel may be required around 2–3+ times per month for significant business needs, typically 1–3 days at a time.
Responsibilities
- Engage with middle‑market and lower‑middle‑market buyout funds, sector specialists, and serial acquirers throughout the pre‑sales process and remain involved post‑sale.
- Lead pilots on live opportunities, guiding sponsors through what’s possible with AI.
- Sit down with deal teams to build screening, underwriting, diligence, and investment committee workflows in the firm’s own templates and formats.
- Perform CIM and management presentation review; QoE and data pack analysis; banker and operating model interrogation; LBO and returns analysis; comps; add‑on screening; and investment committee materials preparation.
- Continue work post‑close into portfolio monitoring, add‑on pipeline tracking, and valuation support so value compounds after the first deal.
- Bring deal‑team feedback back into the product to help shape Harvey’s future roadmap.
- Travel approximately 2–3+ times per month for significant business needs, typically 1–3 days per trip.
Requirements
- 3+ years of experience on the investment team at a buyout fund (middle‑market or lower‑middle‑market, ideally with add‑on activity) or a growth‑buyout or sector‑specialist fund, with demonstrated ownership of live deal work: screening, underwriting, diligence workstreams, modeling, and drafting investment committee materials.
- Investment banking or transaction advisory experience before the buyside is welcome, but principal‑side deal execution is required.
- Strong command of the documents and data that drive a buyout decision—CIM and management presentation, QoE and data pack, banker and operating models, LBO, purchase agreement and financing terms—and an instinct for where the numbers and the paper disagree.
- Advanced Excel and financial modeling skills; comfort with prompting and agentic AI workflows; a builder’s instinct for turning repeated manual processes into repeatable automation.
- Experience with Python, SQL, or building internal tools is a plus.
- Executive presence and relationship‑building skills, able to establish credibility from analysts and associates through to partners and investment committee members.
- Outstanding communication and presentation skills—comfortable leading live demos, facilitating workshops, or holding your own in technical conversations about underwriting assumptions.
- Deep curiosity about AI’s potential to transform investment work, paired with a practical, solutions‑oriented mindset and bias toward action.
- Track record of partnering with senior stakeholders to drive results, with curiosity for testing approaches and optimizing for customer outcomes.
- Customer‑facing or commercial experience (LP or investor relations, capital formation, banking coverage, business development) and/or hands‑on experience using AI tools in an investment setting are pluses.
