Forest Technician - 3 Year Limited Term

About the role

The Forest Technician position with the Pennsylvania Game Commission in the Southeast Region supports vital habitat projects by strengthening young forest environments that support diverse wildlife across the region. The role involves active, outdoor work contributing to conservation goals through fieldwork, mapping, and data collection.

Responsibilities

• Boundary Marking – Mark boundaries for timber sales, herbicide areas, and habitat treatments following instructions from foresters.
• Timber Evaluation – Examine trees, mark timber, and complete volume computations according to forester prescriptions.
• Field Data Collection – Assist in gathering data for stand analysis, sale layout, and related forestry activities.
• GPS Mapping – Collect GPS data for management activities and produce maps for forester approval.
• Equipment Care – Maintain tools and equipment used in forest habitat management activities.
• Fire Duties – Perform assigned wildland fire responsibilities.

Qualifications

• Minimum Experience and Training: An associate’s degree in forest technology or equivalent formal education in forestry. Applicants within three months of graduating with a qualifying degree/credits will be considered.
• PA residency requirement is currently waived for this title.
• Ability to perform essential job functions.
• Legal Requirements: Must submit and obtain satisfactory criminal history reports, including PA State Police clearance, PA Child Abuse history clearance, and FBI fingerprint clearance, in accordance with the Child Protective Services Law.

Schedule

• 3‑year limited term, full‑time employment.
• Work hours: 7:00 AM to 3:30 PM, Monday – Friday, with a 30‑minute lunch break.
• No telework option.
