Foreperson CDL Required Non-Union

About the Role

The Foreperson ensures the productivity of daily operations, working closely with management to determine recruiting/hiring needs, deadlines, and safety protocols. This role involves troubleshooting routine job site issues, engaging employees/contractors on required training, managing, and mentoring the crew.

Responsibilities

• Plans, coordinates, and assigns daily work for the crew after receiving/interpreting orders from a General Foreperson/Line Clearance Supervisor.
• Conducts field training/retraining, instructing crew on new or revised job units.
• Promotes and upholds a culture of safety, applying sound judgment, adhering to company policies, and complying with OSHA specifications.
• Conducts safety training in accordance with company policies and procedures.
• Discusses with property owners/customers issues such as obtaining access, power interruption, work to be done, and responsibility for apparent property damage; refers controversial cases to the General Foreperson.
• Obtains oral or written permission from property owners to perform required work.
• Promotes and maintains good customer and public relations through effective completion of assigned work and appropriate crew behavior.
• May investigate incident reports, damage claims, and settle minor damage claims.
• Maintains accurate records, timesheets, and reports related to crew performance and operations.
• Controls crew costs, including effective use of personnel, work methods, and equipment operation.
• Furnishes reports to the General Foreperson and utility representatives on orders completed, units of work, crew time, minor damage repairs, and distribution.
• Periodically reports on incidents, truck breakdowns, private property damage, new employee follow-up, etc.
• Cooperates with customers, police, and fire departments when blocking streets or driveways.
• Establishes physical safeguards such as barriers, warning signs, flags, and markers to protect employees and the public.
• Makes swift, informed decisions in emergency situations to mitigate risks to life and property.
• Inspects and repairs tools, trucks, and other equipment; maintains DOT inspection requirements on all vehicles.
• Maintains good housekeeping on trucks and at work locations.
• Stays informed on new equipment, specifications, standard practices, operating procedures, and company policies, including EEO and AA policies.
• Requests repair or replacement of equipment as necessary.

Requirements

• Understanding of drawings and symbols representing lines, voltages, and line equipment.
• Excellent communication and leadership skills.
• Strong organizational skills and ability to multitask.
• Capability to adjust to field requirements and take independent action without close supervision.
• Ability to safely drive an approved company vehicle.
• Ability to work with hands above head for extended periods.
• Weight should not exceed approximately 300 pounds due to equipment capacity.
• No fear of heights.

Qualifications

• Must be 18 years or older.
• High School Diploma or GED equivalent preferred.
• 1+ year of experience in the Line Clearance industry required.
• Valid Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) required.

Physical Requirements

• Rare (less than 10%): crawling, climbing, gripping, lifting up to 50 lbs.
• Occasional (up to 33%): standing, stooping, kneeling, squatting, body-twisting, sense of touch, manual dexterity, lifting over 10 lbs. to 50 lbs., reaching, range-of-motion, lifting, carrying, pushing, pulling, climbing ladders, climbing stairs, balancing.
• Frequent (up to 66%): walking, sitting, climbing on/off truck, reading, lifting up to 10 lbs.
• Continuous (up to 100%): speaking clearly, seeing distant, seeing, hearing-speech-range, depth-perception, color vision.

Due to the inherently dangerous nature of the industry, employees must:

• Have sufficient eyesight to judge distance and coordinate equipment/tools.
• Maintain attention and concentration for extended periods.
• Withstand exposure to all weather conditions while completing work assignments.
• Wear personal protective equipment as necessary.
• Enter and exit a vehicle numerous times a day.
• Have endurance to traverse various terrain.
• Perform job duties throughout a standard 8- or 10-hour day.
• Communicate effectively, read, write, and comprehend job instructions.
• Handle conflict professionally.

Work environment includes:

• Proximity to energized power lines.
• Excessive noise from machines, chainsaws, woodchippers, and other equipment (hearing protection provided).
• Exposure to all temperatures, weather conditions, nature (e.g., irritating plants, biting/stinging insects, dust).
• Work at varying heights above ground and on unlevel terrain.
• Mentally and physically demanding work under unfavorable weather conditions while handling equipment or materials.
