About the Role

A Forensic Scientist II conducts complex chemical, biological, physical, or comparative analysis of criminal evidence in the Forensic Lab. Employees perform laboratory tests or comparative analyses in one of the specialized forensic disciplines: Firearms and Toolmarking; Controlled Dangerous Substances; Toxicology, Serology, DNA, Trace Evidence, or Latent Print Examination. Work involves no supervisory duties and is performed under general supervision from a technical supervisor. Employees work a rotating shift and are on-call 24 hours a day, seven days a week. The role includes exposure to toxic fumes, chemicals, unknown dangerous substances, and sharp laboratory instruments, with minimal physical exertion required.

Requirements

On or before the date of filing the application, each candidate must meet the following qualifications:

• Education: Bachelor’s degree in chemistry, biology, forensic science, criminal justice, or a related physical or natural science from an accredited college or university.
• Experience: Two years of experience in comparative analysis or scientific evaluation of evidence, including examining firearms, latent fingerprints, or providing testimony in moot or criminal court.
• Equivalency Option: Master’s degree in the above fields plus one year of the required experience.

Licenses, Registrations, and Certificates: Positions in the Drug Analysis Unit require certification by the Maryland Department of Health and Mental Hygiene to analyze Controlled Dangerous Substances. Certification from a National Certifying Board in Latent Print Examination may also be required. Candidates under final consideration must authorize the release of criminal conviction information.

Skills

• Knowledge of forensic science principles and techniques.
• Knowledge of analytical chemistry, physics, biology, and computer technology applications in forensic science.
• Knowledge of rules governing evidence admissibility in court.
• Knowledge of techniques and equipment for handwriting/document analysis, serological analysis, trace evidence, DNA analysis, arson investigation, and controlled dangerous substances identification.
• Knowledge of firearms classification, identification, and related evidence admissibility rules.
• Knowledge of fingerprint classification techniques and latent fingerprint identification.
• Ability to perform complex laboratory tests using computerized instruments and interpret results accurately.
• Ability to apply computer software to laboratory specifications.
• Ability to write complex technical laboratory reports.
• Ability to testify effectively in court and prepare exhibits.

Pay

Salary Range: $78,588.00 – $125,740.00 annually. Hiring Salary Range: $78,588.00 – $102,164.00 annually.

• Selected candidates must complete a mandatory one-year probation period.
• Qualified candidates will be considered for vacancies for at least six months.
