The New Mexico Scientific Laboratories conducts tests for infectious diseases, hazardous materials, and pollutants. The Toxicology Bureau provides toxicology and testimony services for criminal cases involving alcohol and/or drugs.
Why Does the Job Exist?
This position performs forensic analysis of biological samples in criminal investigations within an accredited laboratory. It tests for the presence of drugs and poisons in evidential blood and urine samples, reviews other analysts' results, and provides factual/expert testimony in court.
How Does It Get Done?
- Analyzes complex data and biological samples to find drugs/toxins and their metabolites
- Creates formal reports based on analysis results
- Develops new analytical methods
- Provides factual/expert testimony in courts of law
Who Are the Customers?
The Toxicology Bureau analyzes casework submitted by law enforcement agencies and the Office of the Medical Investigator. Customers are the citizens of the State of New Mexico.
Minimum Qualification
- DNA Analysts: Bachelor's Degree in Biology, Chemistry, Forensic Science, Biochemistry, Genetics, or Molecular Biology and 9 credit hours of relevant coursework
- Chemists: Bachelor's Degree in Chemistry or Forensic Science with 20 credit hours of chemistry coursework
- Latent Print and Firearm Forensic Scientists: Bachelor's degree or Associates' degree plus 2 years of additional laboratory experience or 4 years of additional laboratory experience

- Working Conditions: Fully functional laboratory with potential exposure to hazardous substances, mechanical hazards, and exposure to odors, noise, and biological pathogens
