About the role

The Michigan State Police is seeking two positions within the Forensic Science Division. These roles involve examining forensic evidence, such as body fluid identification and DNA analysis, testifying in court, conducting crime scene investigations, and supporting the validation of new methods, equipment, and instruments.

Responsibilities

• Examine forensic evidence in connection with criminal cases in the areas of Body Fluid ID and DNA.
• Testify in court.
• Conduct crime scene investigations.
• Support the validation of new methods, equipment, and instruments.
• Receive direct training by a senior-level scientist or manager until fully competent.
• Perform all duties in a bias-free manner.

Requirements

This position requires a bachelor's degree in forensic science, natural science, or a related pure or applied science. For positions requiring a chemical/biological specialty, a bachelor's degree in forensic science, chemistry, biochemistry, biology, microbiology, or a related field is necessary. Experience includes a minimum of one year of professional experience working in a crime laboratory, performing various tests, analyses, or production and research activities involving chemical, biochemical, biological, or physical evidence samples, specimens, or products, equivalent to a Forensic Scientist 9. For positions requiring a higher level, two years of professional experience are needed, including one year equivalent to a Forensic Scientist 10.

Qualifications

Positions in this class are test-designated and subject to pre-appointment, random-selection, and post-accident drug and alcohol testing. A DNA sample must be submitted for inclusion in the DNA Staff Index. Applicants must pass a pre-employment screening, including a drug screen, criminal history background check, and a fingerprint check by the Michigan State Police.

Skills

Knowledge of forensic science principles and practices, ability to work independently and as part of a team, strong analytical skills, and proficiency in using laboratory equipment and software are essential.
