Forensic Nurse Examiner (FNE)

About the role

This is a part-time position with days and shifts varying based on department needs. The schedule includes 3-4 weekend night shifts every 8-week period and 1 holiday shift per year. Travel is expected to any Inova FACT location, including Inova Fairfax Hospital, Inova Alexandria Hospital, Inova Loudoun Hospital (Cornwall), Inova Willow Oaks (Dunn Loring), and any Inova Emergency Department.

Responsibilities

• Utilizes standards, guidelines, and pathways for care delivery while determining processes for delivery of care through direct patient and family communication, technology, and collaboration with other healthcare team members.
• Provides safe and therapeutic care in a holistic and systematic way, incorporating differences into the provision of care.
• Conducts all patient care in a patient- and family-centered manner and arrives within the necessary defined timeframe for each request.
• Responds to all subpoenas for cases examined as a sexual assault nurse examiner.
• Participates in sexual assault/physical violence research projects and assists with lectures/presentations to medical staff, nurses, law enforcement agencies, and community groups.
• Develops and adheres to sexual assault policies, procedures, protocols, and guidelines; participates in documentation and evaluation processes with colleagues and leadership.
• Supports and empowers patients and families through the healthcare continuum, from health promotion to end-of-life decisions.
• Provides validation of clinical decisions for other staff members and seeks validation from others for complex patients or unfamiliar situations.
• Works collaboratively and demonstrates respect for and an understanding of other clinical disciplines.
• Performs other duties as assigned.

Requirements

• Bachelor's Degree in Nursing or Associate's Degree in Nursing. If RN has an Associate's Degree, within 2 years of hire, they must:
  • Identify which accredited school they plan to attend.
  • Provide a written plan with anticipated BSN completion date.
  • Submit a review of transcripts from the school indicating required prerequisites and timeline for taking the courses.
  • Complete BSN within 5 years of the start date.
• 6 months of RN experience.
• BLS for Healthcare Provider certification from the American Heart Association.
• Licensed or eligible for licensure in the Commonwealth of Virginia as a Registered Nurse or an active multi-state Registered Nurse license.
• Ability to successfully complete required fingerprinting/background screening.
• Candidates whose primary Inova position is 0.5 FTE or greater are not eligible to hold a concurrent FACT position due to scheduling and orientation requirements.

Preferred Qualifications

• Previous experience in forensic nursing.
• Completion of Adult and Pediatric SANE (Sexual Assault Nurse Examiner) training within 30 days of hire.
• Ability to work flexible hours and shifts.
• Ability to travel to any Inova FACT locations.
