Foreman

Overnight shift: 2000 – 0700, days off Thursday, Friday, Saturday.

Responsibilities

• Oversees employees in performance of work and provides guidance in resolution of routine problems.
• Builds, repairs, and maintains track.
• Familiarizes employees with established organization procedures, rules, and regulations.
• Directs and instructs operator of equipment assigned to the gang; instructs employees under supervision in the safe performance of work and ensures compliance with all applicable rules and instructions.
• Assigns and checks work of designated staff.
• Establishes interdepartmental communication to maximize work windows and meet corporate objectives.
• Ensures all tools, equipment, materials, and supplies are safely stored and properly used.
• Utilizes and maintains assigned equipment in accordance with instructions.
• Prepares and maintains accurate records of daily tasks, payroll, production reports, accident and injury reports, personnel reports, and all other required records.
• Completes annual training and passes safety and track worker rules examinations.
• Subject to random testing for drugs and/or alcohol.
• Membership in the governing collective bargaining agreement is required.
• Works safely to prevent on-the-job accidents and injuries; strictly complies with FEC Safety Policies.
• Wears protective equipment such as hard hat, hearing protection, safety-toe boots, or safety glasses.
• Travel may be required depending on section.
• Performs other duties or tasks as assigned by manager.

Requirements

• Must possess and maintain a valid driver’s license and valid credentials required by federal and state laws, including a CDL Class B, at all times while performing duties.
• Required to operate railway highway motor vehicles.
• Must have a standard railroad watch.
• Must be familiar with and understand FRA Track Safety Standards Part 213 Subpart A to G as published by the Federal Railroad Administration; must have A & B qualifications.
• At least one year of responsible supervisory experience in track maintenance in Class 4 or higher.
• Must be capable of operating all FEC Maintenance of Way vehicles in its fleet regardless of transmission configuration and must qualify and secure a motor car maintainer permit.
• Must successfully complete and pass all FEC Rules Classes: Safety, Operating, and Roadway Worker upon employment.
• Must complete all requirements to obtain FRA A & B certifications and pass the test within 30 days.
• Must pass a background screening and medical examination, including a drug and physical capabilities test.
• Must successfully complete probationary period and pass all required assessments.

Working Conditions

• Regularly required to stand, walk, use hands to finger, handle, or feel objects, tools, or controls; reach with hands and arms; climb or balance; stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl; and talk, hear, or smell.
• Must occasionally lift and/or move up to 100 pounds.
• Regularly works in outside weather conditions.
• Occasionally works near moving mechanical parts and in high, precarious places.
• Occasionally exposed to fumes or airborne particles and risk of electrical shock.
• Work hours may include a nonstandard workweek, overtime, and various shift work.
• The noise level in the work environment is usually loud.

Qualifications

• High school diploma or general education degree (GED); and one to three months related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
• Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals.
• Ability to write routine reports and correspondence.
• Ability to speak effectively.
• Ability to calculate figures and amounts such as discounts, interest, commissions, proportions, percentages, area, circumference, and volume.
• Ability to apply concepts of basic algebra and geometry.
• Ability to apply commonsense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form.
• Ability to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations.
• Specific vision abilities required include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.
