About the Role

The primary purpose of this position is to provide foreign language interpreting services in a variety of settings. Employees ensure that all services, communications, documentation, etc., associated with a program are provided in the client’s native language as mandated by law, program guidelines, or needs.

Responsible for interpreting and translating Spanish for Child Welfare Intake staff to explain services/guidelines, determine needs, interpret for social workers, translate forms and educational materials, and handle phone calls/messages/parent visits.

Work involves face-to-face and telephone contacts with a culturally diverse, high-risk population of case management clients. Most work is conducted within the Social Services department, with home and/or business visits as a regular part of job duties.

The Foreign Language Interpreter must be available during established hours to ensure critical communications are effectively and timely handled.

Responsibilities

  • Provide verbal interpretation of all information shared between staff and clients/parents/caregivers.
  • Translate written materials, including forms and educational documents.
  • Serve as a point of contact for clients, coordinating transportation and arranging referrals to local services and resources.
  • Interpret test items, programmatic information, or results of evaluations.
  • Conduct interviews to obtain program or personal data.
  • Assist management in monitoring the accuracy of translating/interpreting services.
  • Ensure clients receive appropriate services by assisting in determining, offering, or facilitating access to them.
  • Act as a resource to staff on cultural diversity and conduct staff development events to increase knowledge of the culture.
  • Facilitate parental involvement and understanding.
  • Accurately record and document all interpreting and translating activities.
  • Interpret medical and socio/economic information effectively and correctly.
  • Route communications to the proper operational intake or caseworker.

Work settings may include offices, classrooms, homes, childcare environments, hospitals, or prisons.

Requirements

  • Graduation from high school or GED.
  • One year of experience, preferably in a health care or human services setting, demonstrating fluency in English and Spanish.
  • Working knowledge of Social Services Programs and other services offered by the Department.
  • Regular attendance and punctuality are essential.
