Foreign Language Interpreter
Full-time, 40 hours per week. Pay range: $24.21 – $35.04 per hour.
About the role
Provide translation and interpreter services—both written and oral—to Spanish-speaking patients, their families, and staff throughout Good Shepherd Health Care System (GSHCS). When not interpreting, perform other duties in the clinic as assigned, including clerical tasks, transporting, and related support functions.
Responsibilities
- Represent GSHCS professionally in interactions with patients, families, physicians, visitors, and staff through appropriate language, dress, and conduct.
- Maintain awareness of communication issues in patient care and apply this knowledge in decisions and job performance.
- Uphold patient confidentiality and demonstrate concern for effective communication between patients and medical providers.
- Confirm patient understanding by having them repeat back instructions.
- Follow GSHCS principles, practices, standards, and policies in assisting patients.
- Comply with GSHCS and department policies and procedures.
- Support the hospital’s mission, vision, values, policies, and procedures.
- Participate in required education for DNV programs as applicable to the position.
- Perform other related duties as assigned.
Requirements
- High school diploma or GED (must be provided upon hire).
- Qualified Health Care Interpreter (OHA) certification within 6 months of hire.
- Fluency in both Spanish and English.
- Excellent customer service and communication skills.
Preferred Qualifications
- Associate’s degree and/or technical training as an interpreter.
- Qualified or Certified Health Care Interpreter (OHA).
- One year or more of experience in a health care or human services setting.
- Knowledge of medical terminology and interpreting/translating skills.
- Strong background in medical terminology.
- Proficiency with computers, phones, and office equipment.
- Knowledge of insurance regulations, filing procedures, and documentation.
Physical Requirements
- Prolonged periods of sitting at a desk and working on a computer.
- Occasional walking, standing, bending, or lifting light office items (up to 25 pounds).
- Visual acuity to view computer screens and read detailed documents.
- Ability to communicate effectively in person, by phone, and electronically.
- Ability to move throughout the healthcare facility, including administrative and clinical areas.
Working Conditions
This position operates in a professional office setting within a healthcare facility. Routine use of standard office equipment such as computers, phones, photocopiers, and filing cabinets. The office environment is climate-controlled, well-lit, and ergonomically designed for extended computer work.
While primarily office-based and not involving direct patient care, occasional presence in clinical areas or interaction with clinical staff may expose the employee to infectious diseases. Appropriate training and personal protective equipment (PPE) are provided to ensure safety.
