About the Role

The Foot Health Medical Assistant provides foot health services, carrying out physician orders for diabetic foot exams and foot care toenail trimming services. This role assists fellow employees in delivering high-quality, personalized patient care and maintains positive working relationships within the healthcare team. The position supports the Gonzaba coordinated care model by collaborating with all GMG providers and supporting departments to ensure a patient-centered approach.

Responsibilities

  • Provides patient care in a clinic setting, functioning within the scope of training received from a Medical Assistant education program and Gonzaba Medical Group programs (e.g., proper toenail trimmings, debridement of callouses, and educational toenail teachings).
  • Performs triage, including obtaining patients’ height, weight, removing shoes/socks, and reviewing/completing questionnaires for diabetic shoe services.
  • Handles patient dismissals, participates in patient teaching using informational handouts, ensures patient understanding, and documents thoroughly.
  • Downloads and uploads photos into the EMR system.
  • Administers flu injections during flu season.
  • Reports abnormal values and accurately documents clinical findings in the EMR system for the Foot Health Practitioner.
  • Coordinates patient care by communicating effectively with physicians, scheduling appointments, and providing community resources.
  • Obtains information by telephone or observation, completes confirmation calls in the EMR system, and documents patient symptoms or changes in condition.
  • Escorts patients and their significant others to clinic areas essential to their treatment.
  • Preps patient charts the day before appointments to ensure criteria for services are met and communicates with patients to prevent duplicate appointments/orders.
  • Documents and completes dispensed reports from shoe vendors in the EMR system.
  • Submits supply orders to management for necessary materials and equipment in a timely manner.
  • Maintains assigned work areas with required supplies and equipment.
  • Cleans and disinfects nail nippers, dremel heads, and all toenail trimming equipment after each use.
  • Performs routine cleaning and maintenance of the autoclave according to protocol.
  • Follows universal precaution standards for patient care, procedures, handling specimens, and cleaning exam rooms.
  • Transports patients safely between positions (e.g., sitting to standing, wheelchair assistance) and prioritizes patient safety to prevent falls.
  • Travels to support patient care at all GMG locations on a rotational basis.
  • Performs administrative functions such as rounding for provider signatures, scanning documents into the EMR, faxing paperwork, sending emails, and completing insurance authorizations for DME.
  • Adheres to nursing standards of care, including participation in quality improvement activities.
  • Maintains clinical competencies per Gonzaba Medical Group policy and ensures customer service is upheld at the highest level.
  • Participates in educational programs as needed and aligns with departmental goals, including reporting RMH visits and utilizing provided tools/reports.
  • Completes all forms and reports assigned by management and maintains strict confidentiality.
  • Other duties as assigned by supervisor.

Requirements

  • Minimum high school education or equivalent.
  • Certificate of completion from an accredited school for Medical Assistants.
  • CPR certification with AED (must be kept current).
  • National certification as a Registered or Certified Medical Assistant (required for employment and continued employment). Certification must be issued from one of the following associations: AAMA (CMA), ARMA (RMA), NAHP (NRCMA), or other associations approved by GMG Human Resources.
  • Experience in a clinic, doctor’s office, or hospital (minimum one year preferred).

Skills

  • Proficient in computer/EMR systems, including word processing, spreadsheet software, internet, and database software.
  • Manual dexterity for clinical tasks (e.g., toenail trimming, equipment handling).
  • Ability to lift up to 40 lbs. without assistance.
  • Physical ability to perform tasks requiring sitting, standing, stooping, reaching, kneeling, crouching, bending, and walking.
  • Close vision and ability to adjust focus.
  • Strong customer service skills, including in-person communication.
  • Ability to work efficiently under pressure and adapt to changing needs.

Work Environment

  • Clinic environment with exposure to communicable diseases, bodily fluids, toxic substances, ionizing radiation, medicinal preparations, and other conditions common to a clinical setting.
  • Requires travel to GMG locations using a company or personal vehicle (must pass a motor vehicle history check, possess a valid Texas Driver License, and maintain current insurance for mileage reimbursement).
