About the role

Food Service Staff are responsible for the daily operations of the school's food service program. This role prepares and serves meals in accordance with federal, state, and local regulations.

Responsibilities

  • Reports equipment malfunctions to notify supervisor of need for repair and/or replacement.
  • Arranges food and beverage items to serve them to students and staff efficiently.
  • Cleans utensils, equipment, storage, food preparation, and serving areas (e.g., pots, pans, baking sheets, steam tables, student trays, work areas, floors, trash receptacles) to maintain sanitary conditions.
  • Inspects food items and supplies to verify quality and compliance with mandated health standards.
  • Prepares food and beverage items to meet mandated nutritional and projected meal requirements.
  • Attends food services department meetings, in-service training, and workshops to gather required job information.
  • Maintains equipment, storage, and food preparation areas in a safe and sanitary condition (e.g., recording refrigeration temperatures) to comply with health and safety standards.
  • Monitors kitchen and cafeteria areas to ensure a safe and sanitary working environment.
  • Performs functions of other food services positions as requested to ensure adequate staff coverage.
  • Serves food items to meet mandated nutritional requirements and/or requests of students and school personnel.
  • Transports food and beverages from storage and preparation areas to the food line.
  • Implements participation promotions to build student involvement and increase participation in food services programs.
  • Maintains student confidentiality (e.g., student eligibility for free and reduced lunch, student account information) to protect student privacy.
  • Inspects food and beverage items to ensure proper cooking and holding temperatures, as well as pleasing taste and appearance.
  • Follows SOPs, HACCP guidelines, and food safety requirements (e.g., recording storage, cooking, cooling, holding, serving temperatures) to ensure food safety and sanitation.
  • Adheres to federal, state, and local laws to ensure compliance.
  • Works with coworkers in a pleasant and professional manner to create a professional working atmosphere.
  • Follows Food Services Policy, Standardized Recipes, and Training Manual to maintain department standards.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned to ensure the efficient and effective functioning of the work unit.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent required.
  • Experience in food service management, preferably in an educational setting.
  • Knowledge of federal and state regulations related to school nutrition programs and sanitation practices.
  • Food Safety Manager Certification (e.g., ServSafe) is preferred.
  • Ability to work effectively with students and staff.
  • Ability to lift and carry heavy items and stand for extended periods.

Environmental Conditions

This position requires working in a kitchen environment, which involves exposure to hot surfaces, sharp tools, and cleaning chemicals. The Food Service Staff may need to work occasional evenings or weekends for special events or additional training. Regular travel within the school building and occasional off-site meetings may be required.

Pay

$15.00–$22.00 per hour, depending on qualifications.

Schedule

Part-time, 10-month position.
