About the role
The Food Services Assistant (FSA) position at Houston Methodist is responsible for performing various duties in the kitchen, patient tray line, and/or retail areas. Duties include assisting with tray assembly for patients, simple food preparation, serving customers, setting up stations, transporting food carts, and performing dishwashing.
Responsibilities
- Assists in tray assembly for patients
- Serves simple food items as directed
- Delivers trays to designated locations
- Assembles trays on the tray-line as needed
- Works in the dish room as assigned
- Retrieves soiled trays and returns carts to appropriate locations
- Ensures patient tray setup and supplies are stocked for each meal period
- Follows proper procedures for loading and transporting food delivery carts
- Ensures food is presented attractively and held at the proper temperature
- Follows local Food Ordinances including proper labeling and discarding expired food
- Prepares and reviews menus in advance to ensure supplies are available
- Minimizes food waste through portion control and efficient use of resources
- Generates and communicates new ideas to improve quality or service
Qualifications
- High School diploma or equivalent education (examples include: GED, verification of homeschool equivalency, partial or full completion of post-secondary education, etc.) preferred
- Experience in a food service environment or large service establishment preferred
- Required: Food Handlers Permit - Various Issuers Accredited food handler training course approved by the Texas Department of State Health Services (TXDSHS) or by the American National Standards Institute (ANSI)
Skills and Abilities
- Demonstrates the skills and competencies necessary to safely perform the assigned job
- Sufficient proficiency in speaking, reading, and writing the English language
- Effective communication with patients, physicians, family members, and co-workers
- Working knowledge of Serve Safe guidelines and Health department standards
- Knowledge of kitchen equipment and sanitation principles
- Active listening skills
- Knowledge of kitchen equipment
